@@@ Nice Biscuit: Digital Mountain (Self released, 2018) I got to this Australian rock record via the Happy online music magazine. That’s out of Australia, Happy Mag that is. This first tune has a rocking vibe with a few sci fi threads/’80s flavors. Chorused guitars, quirky female vocalists and some pretty straight rocking. I’m not a huge fan of these guitar sounds but I do like the weirdness of what they have going on. The third tune sounds like Devo and Yes had a proggy little weird ass love baby. Song lengths aren’t your standard 3 minute pop biscuits, the shortest is just shy of 5 minutes with some going up over 7 minutes so a little bit of jam for your biscuits.
@@@ Girl Band: The Talkies (Rough Trade, 2018) I got to this Irish rock band record via the Line of Best fit weekly email. After a weird intro they get into a noisy and bashy punk flavored tune called Going Norway. The singer is a shouter and a bit unhinged. Thus far I’m not sensing that they want to perform songs, more like big shots of blustering sound. I’m not opposed to the absence of melody and structure, I’m cool with that but I haven’t connected with these tunes yet. I like the noise of the guitars and drums on this record and the singer’s nuttiness but the tunes leave me a bit unengaged.
@@@ Kate Teague: Kate Teague (Muscle Beach, 2018) Ah, this fall’s indie guitar new flavor. If you’re an indie listener you’ve heard this formula dozens of times — shiny arpeggiated guitar, straight rock drumming and female singing. It’s a bit melancholy, a bit slack, and a wee bit rocking. I’m not sure what to say here, I don’t strongly dislike it but it’s very standard fare. Also it’s a bit ironic that hipsters can think repeated versions of the same record is hip.
