@@@ Sacred Reich: Awakening (Metal Blade, 2019) Off the All Music notable release email as is the bottom listen as well. In this era of resurgent Nazism it’s weird to see the word Reich front and center on a metal record but who really knows what it means. They come out hard and fast classic metal. A little thrash, some big screaming guitar solos, some double kick bass drum action with an big, operatic singer out front. The second tune Divide and Conquer is much mo brisk. I think the drum sound is fantastic and a tad silly at the same time and while I like the energy here, they sure are a rockin’, it’s pretty standard. To me this is cucumber in the lederhosen metal and cheap beer business.
@@@ A$AP Rocky: Babushka Boi (RCA, 2019) #1 in the Apple Music hot tracks section. I’m expecting a blend of hip hop and Jewish music with the word Babushka in it:) Some retro NYC beats I’m gonna have to peep the lyrics to see that it’s an anthem to Scarface and I assume gangstas in general. There’s a processed vocal loop tucked in there about squeezing the trigger over and over so overall lyrically I get the theme but I have no clue what a babushka means in the hood. Hold up. Oh, it’s explained over at Genius, I guess he got his face slashed and he wore a babushka so the whole thing is about him. Welcome to hip hop, land of the mostly self absorbed. Nice beats and arrangement.
@@@ Jason Hawke Harris: Love and the Dark (Bloodshot, 2019) Also All Music! From the initial flush of sound and the generous use of reverb this looks to be some epic country music. The first tune The Smoke and the Stars is a bit overwrought for my taste — a tad slow, a tad over the top, let’s peep some more. The second tune switches gear and goes for an upbeat drinking song which I find more acceptable. It’s an all right record but I’m not a huge fan of the just under the surface pop/mainstream elements. A lot of new school country music incorporates sounds and elements of other genres so it’s not uncommon but I’m not a fan as it comes across as self-hating country music. Look below, a country music with an image of somebody in sloppy ass KISS makeup, naimsayin’?
