Music for 8/15/19!!! Ali Berger, Thom Yorke, Katy Perry

@@@ Ali Berger: Sump Pump EP (Ghostly, 2019)  A pre release techno jam I got to via a twat on the Twatter.  It’s rocking the classic techno beat with a voice repeating the word ‘pump’ repeatedly.  I mean that’s a bit of a double entendre and I get that but I’m not sure I need to hear a dude say sump and then pump dozens and dozens of time.  What if I made this review into the following: sump pump sump pump sump pump sump pump sump pump sump pump.  You get the idea.  I appreciate the bounce and funkiness of the arrangement but I could use a bit more up top, naimsayin’?

@@@ Thom Yorke: ANIMA (XL, 2019)  I’ve not checked out Yorke’s solo record recently released til now.  I have a good friend who is mercilessly negative on Yorke, his voice, and his general demeanor, and whole trip and I think that has taken its toll on my perception of him.  This is electronic music built up into songs unlike a lot of electronic music which serves up limited vocals (sump pump sump pump sump pump) and long funky jams.  Yorke is gonna serve up some high quality sounds so it down to the tunes.  I’m agnostic on the opening tune, let’s skip ahead.  Thus far I feel there’s a bit too much Thom and I could use more of the sounds which are really nice.  The third tune, Twist, is more sonics and less vocals and I’m enjoying it more.  I’m feeling this simple tune, Dawn Chorus, but overall I’m agnostic on this record.  I dig aspects of it but I’m not jumping up and down.

@@@ Katy Perry: Small Talk (Capitol, 2019)  Up on the Apple Music hot tracks section.  It’s a breakup pop tune and while the lyrics are pretty high school she does some trick singing here.  It’s too bad she doesn’t have better material.  The sounds are pop funk with a synth based arrangement that doesn’t really add much to the tune, it just gets out of the way for her vocals.  I like the beat.  These days the bar for a mainstream pop tune is pretty low so when I say this is a good tune, it’s within that context.
