Music for 8/9/19!!! Dolphine, Nancy Braithwaite, Trippie Redd

@@@ Mega Bog: Dolphine (Paradise of Bachelors, 2019)  I saw this record twatted about as music deserving more ears, so peep it I shall.  The record opens with spacious reverbed guitars and tinkly percussion with a bit of a country lilt.  It then segues into late ’70s FM soft rock.  Oh boy, deep into that vibe for sure.  It’s like Yes and Joni Mitchell had a lovebaby.  It’s meticulously put together and perfectly played but I’m having trouble appreciating it.  I dig that it’s a mix of sounds smashed together — indie, prog, a smear of country, some ambient sounds etc but it’s not working for me.  Check for yourself.

@@@  Nancy Braithwaite: Songs and Chamber Works of Edith Hemenway (Etcetera, 2019) I got to this classical music recording of works by never recorded female compose — that would be Edith Hemenway.  The instrumentation here is cello, piano, clarinet and soprano vocals.  It is a distinct compositional style, both modern but fitting within familiar classical sounds.  4 tracks are up on Soundcloud and I’m really enjoying the second one, Asian Figures: Ferns Bend Into the Wind.  It’s a spare piece with a beautiful clarinet melody.  I listened to all four of the tracks available as I don’t get a shot at new classical music often and I enjoyed it.  Rich and expressive.

@@@ Trippie Redd: Snake Skin (Ten Thousand Projects LLC, 2019)  This single is #2 pole position on the Apple Music hot tracks section.  It’s a hip hop ballad strangely enough and if I understand correctly it’s both about a woman who is bad enough to have a snake skin and then pleading for someone not to commit suicide.  I think the suicide metaphor is how all the n*ggas are gonna commit suicide when they realize all the money Mr. Trippie is making.  The extensive piano vamping is an odd choice as it lends a lounge vibe to these lyrics and the whole track has a somewhat incoherent flavor to it.  I’m at a complete loss as to what this is about.  I know many folks out there don’t insist on songs making sense but I think that’s a reasonable threshhold for a listener.
