Music for 8/1/19!!! The Party on High Street, The Shiverettes, Lil Tjay

@@@ The Party On High Street – Electric Spinach (Self-Released, 2019)  I got to this record and the one below via the weekly playlist email at CFUV in Vancouver.   These guys are, apparently, a Canadian party band.  They are a party band but I would put their musical IQ at a higher number than an American counterpart.  Some of these band members have studied jazz, that’s what it sounds like it to me.  I find the fiddle player especially tasty.  I like the arrangements but the singer less so.  The second tune is about getting hammered and I think the world doesn’t need more songs about getting hammered.  They do a pretty high end job of channeling the Red Hot Chili Peppers on the third tune, Roll On.  I like it all right, check it for yourself.

@@@ The Shiverettes – Real Shrill Bitches (Self-Released, 2019)  Aggro female punk rock a la the Dead Kennedys.  Unfortunately, the singer takes the energy down a bit instead of that manic Jello Biafra injection.  Oh, there she goes losing her nut a bit, good for you!  The second track, Very Cool Dude, continues the overcaffeinated retro punk formula.  Of the four tunes I checked out I enjoyed them all in places though I’m not as interested in the songs as I am the sound of the band and I want to like both.

@@@ Lil Tjay: LANESWITCH (Columbia/Sony, 2019) We continue our listening for summer jam of the season.  Right now we got Nikki Minaj’s Megatron and Chance the Rapper’s Get a Bag as our two top contenders to this point.  I haven’t heard Lil Tjay before and he’s got a compelling mix of sounds going here.  He’s pretty brisk on the microphone and he’s got a blunted out, kaleidoscopic swirling thing behind his rhymes which in this case are medium trap.  He’s talking about two different things here: staying focused on his music and being strong and dangerous at the same time.  I can’t catch everything but the general gist is that he’s not looking for trouble but if trouble comes, naimsayin’?  Not making the cut for jam of the summer except maybe for the macho crowd.
