@@@ Penelope Isles: Cut Your Hair (Bella Union, 2019) I got to this pre-release track via a music publicist email. It’s a indie/classic rock blend, a little Tom Petty and a little of the Strokes. The singer has a spaced out Alex Chilton vibe to his voice which I like. Lots of ooh and aah background vocals in the chorus which I think detracts slightly from the tune. I like some of the sounds but the tune drags beneath the weight of all the background vocals. By they get to a rockin’ at 3:20 my mind is elsewhere which is unfortunate as the tune is more interesting at the end.
@@@ August 08: Simple Pleasures (featuring Goldlink) (Red Bull Records, 2019) A pre-release single I got to via a music publicist email. I enjoy listening to Red Bull Records releases and am awaiting the creation of a Xanax label for anxious people, and a depression based label called Prozac. Red Bull and Red Bull Records is here to get you pumped up and keeped you pumped up until you collapse! It comes out with a processed vocal sample loop and a brisk beat. Brisk beat, this is Red Bull Records! The production is super space age and slicked out as it heads it into a techno dancefloor banger. He’s bummed out that a simple banging pleasure has been ruined by someone having feelings. Poor you, you’re just so irresistible. Goldlink takes a restrained turn on the mic and I dig it, but this singer, AUGUST 08 is not to my taste. I’m betting he stuffs a persian cucumber down his pantaloons before hitting the stage, f’real. It’s a 5 minute track and by 2 minutes the brew is fully boiling — I do dig the sounds but man he wears the vocal hook out to no end. You had to go and get some feelings, I get it. Put some of all the effort you put into the music into some halfway interesting lyrics. And knock it off with the cukes.
@@@ Madeon: Dream Dream Dream (Sony, 2019) Some half glitched gospel influenced pop that is on the far left side of the Apple Music hot tracks section. The sounds here are super epic — lots of chamber reverbs, tons of background vocals (too many one might say) and a big string section (synths I think). While there are some interesting little spots — a cool keyboard vamp at one point — the tune is titled dream dream dream so they went for the big ass cheese bomb. Instead of a huge guitar sound they go for a screaming synth solo. Towards the end of the tune there is some interesting stuff going on in the arrangement, but the overall point of the song is to drown the listener in sonic Cheese Whiz. I’m quite sure it will be huge.
