Music for 7/10/19!!! The Inoculated Canaries, Jesca Hoop, Dreamville

@@@ The Inoculated Canaries: Sneakers (Michael E Rubin, 2019) I got to this tune via the music blog Indiepulse.  It comes out full power chord with a big horn line over it before it settles down into a quieter verse.  It’s as if a frat rock party band got the feels, but it’s about a pair of sneakers.  He keeps waiting for these new kicks to get old.  I’m not sure I understand what the tune is getting at — whether he’s talking about a relationship and its newness or if it’s just about sneakers.  It seems like a lot of energy to expend extolling one’s footwear but that’s just me.

@@@ Jesca Hoop: Stonechild (Memphis Industries, 2019)  I got to this record via this week’s All Music notable release email.  I’m guessing this is gonna be an updated powerful rocking female record.  The opening track here is a bit quirky, building slowly, evoking a blend of Tori Amos feelings based music with a touch of classic rock.  I like it all right.  The second tune (clipped below) continues the slower side of the tempo spectrum so my guess this was going to be a female big rock record is thus far woefully misplaced.  Lots of quiet playing, acoustic guitars and piano with highly melodic vocal performances.  Ms. Hoop can sing.  This isn’t really my cup of tea and I’m a bit surprised this is a summer release.  I would think this sort of bittersweet would be better suited to late fall when you put on a sweater, and hold your cup of chamomile tea with both hands and watch the leaves come down.

@@@ Dreamville: Costa Rica (Interscope, 2019)  Third on the Apple Music hot tracks section.  Most notable sonically is the contrast between the harp sample and the fat, speaker stretching bass.  Multiple MCs with pretty standard trap sounds.  As usual, JID steals the show with his crisp, quick witted delivery and lyrics.  I like the horns/synth horns that comes out in the second half of the track.  I’m not a huge fan of the vocals in the chorus, it’s just pop drama.  If JID carried the ball the whole track it would be in contention for summer jam of the summer and shit but they pass it around.
