@@@ Raheem DeVaughan: The Love Reunion (SoNo, 2019) Super luscious and romantical r&b music off this week’s All Music notable release email. Lots of vocal tracks designed to soothe and moisten your panties. The sounds are super up to date r&b synth based with polished beats to go with the overtly smooth production style. I appreciate the technical skills required to make a record like this but it’s not my favorite type of music to listen to. The third tune, Rose Gold, gets into some really sweet gospel, Prince inspired balladry. Serpentine vocal melodies and a devotional singing style. This track is an ear catcher for sure and the best of what I heard.
@@@ Andre Bratten: Pax Americana (Smalltown Supersound, 2019) I try to listen to Smalltown Supersound releases as they put out some interesting stuff with more variety than most labels. This first tune, HS, is a brisk techno jam with a bouncy bassline and some glitchy percussiveness and some synth whooshes. Nice focused funk, especially the bassline. The second track, the title track, is more downtempo with a stripped back beat clicking away beneath a long tone synth blanket and what may or may not be some processed whispery vocals. I appreciate the focus of these arrangements, not a lot but what’s there is flavorful. Some records are sneakily high quality — restraint and tastefulness are not common American traits these days but this record doesn’t jump up and down in front of you but it’s got it going on. I’m gonna circle back and recommend you check it out as it’s high quality techno.
@@@ Jaden: Again (Universal, 2019) I’m a tad prejudiced against the Pinkett/Will Smith clan. Not due to skin color but to lack of talent and inability to stay out of the spotlight. This is being marketed as trap with other influences over it and I’m not opposed to that formula. Once upon the mic, Jaden is low energy and somewhat overpowered by the sounds. His enunciation could use some work as well. I’m not dogging him, I need to hear the words if you’re not putting out much energy. He does bring a rock like drum beat about halfway through but the splash of it just ends up drowning his mic work out more and I’m pretty amazed by how unremarkable this track is. He goes into an autotuned vocal section with lots of synth bells and it’s essentially two songs, one a trap biscuit and the second half a slow ballad-y teen thing. Meh.
