@@@ Noah Gundersen: Robin Williams ( , 2019) I got to this track via a music publicist that traffics in the higher end of the music business, as in larger acts and more mainstream musicians with higher public profiles. As is often marketed, this musician experienced an emotionally turbulent process making this record. Great, but regular readers know I’m focused solely on the music and not the stories. It opens just like a Daniel Lanois/Emmylou Harris tune with big epic country flavors. Then he starts singing and it’s not Emmylou Harris. He does all right for himself but you need to be ready for a meaningful track as all the signifiers are here. Strummed acoustic guitars, big reverbed guitar washes and the melodies. It’s a tribute I guess to Robin Williams with the line that the Grim Reaper makes the final joke. I can’t picture the shopping mall people going nuts for this and I appreciate the point and maybe think there might have been some more interesting sounds in there.
@@@ Negative Gemini: Different Color Hair ( , 2019) I got to this band via a music publicist email promoting the Adult Swim music festival. These guys and the guys below are listed towards the bottom of the bill which is the area I like to listen to. It’s a dance track with some bird like synth chirps and friendly synth sounds. A dreamy indie voice comes in so it looks set to be a delightfully quirky indie electronic track, not too heavy on the dance funk vibes and heavy on the bedroom lo fi flavors. Right at 1:45 I got mad Cure feels. That’s about what I have to say about this track.
@@@ Dethklok: I ejaculate fire (Williams Street , 2012) I saw Dethklok on a festival banner, I can’t remember where. I think it was for an Adult Swim summer music festival. I guess these guys ride the fine line between death metal and satire of death metal. Most death metal won’t sport titles like I ejaculate fire. Outside of the title it’s pretty standard classic/ramped up metal with all the expected guitar riffage and double kick drum madness and the singer is doing all right.
