Music for 9/7/18!!! Christopher Pellnat, Not Of, Purlicue, bodies

@@@ Christopher Pellnat: Liftoff (Self-released, 2018) I got an email from the artist himself asking for a review so a peep it shall be.  Pellnat has a formal, somewhat British bearing to his voice and the instrumentation on this first track is acoustic and electric guitar, upright bass and another stringed instrument I can’t identify.  The second tune comes with accordion and shaker so Pellnat is not particularly defined by a singular set of sounds but his voice and his literate lyrics do show up on every track.  It’s a pretty eccentric singer songwriter record for nerds.  You might usually associate this kind of music with confessional lyrics but the focus here is not that.

@@@ Not of: Hypocritic Oath (No List, 2018)  I got to this heavy record via the Vancouver radio station CFUV.  This is a duo of drums and electric guitar and they kick up a pretty decent shitstorm for just two gents.  This first tune is pretty barbed with the drums turned up high in the mix and the tune changing at a pretty fast clip.  They get to some pretty vigorous rocking in the second tune Watch Him, They Said.  It’s reminiscent of the Stanford Prison Experiment from medium back in the day.  It’s got a pretty pleasant blend of punk energy and rock energy.  It’s not a straight hardcore record as it sports far more melody.

@@@ Purlicue: Sip ‘n Dip (Self-released, 2018)  We’re going full self-released record Friday with this record that is #1 out on the CFUV charts.  A 5 song EP and the art punk tag they put with this release on bandcamp is appropriate.  It’s two female singers, a couple of guitars, a bass player, and drums on this first tune.  It’s got a distinct Breeders tilt to it but not as wise ass-y.

@@@ bodies: shitty grin (Self-released, 2018)  Our last listen of the day and the tune starts out with an ‘80s rock groove — chorused guitar, that particular drum sound and an earnest singer.  They tag themselves as garage pop and that is an accurate tag.  I’m on the second tune and the combination of the friendly singer and the band’s pleasant rocking does indeed help qualify them as garage poppers.
