@@@ Spector: Ex-Directory (Moth Noise, 2018) I got to this EP via a promo email from the website Line of Best Fit. I have not liked much from the Line of Best Fit, or Flavorpill, but I keep listening! Keep that Obama hope alive. This first tune opens up a little Pavement-y before it shifts gear into a punk/power pop flow. The singer is all right and they have a nice amount of crunch as they execute the classic indie rock quiet verse/power chord chorus. They do add a synth in the second song as those kids love the synth/guitar combo pack these days. The singer helps this EP to work, it doesn’t break any ground as it doesn’t aspire to but it’s all right.
@@@ Tony Njoku: In All its Glory (Tony Njoku, 2017) Also off this week’s Line of Best Fit. I like listening to African musicians living in Europe as it’s an interesting cultural blend. The most interesting sonic element of this track is astral squiggles he has going while he croons. It’s pretty nice ear candy that is followed up with some more standard synth sounds. The beat is pretty minimal and the vocal work is understated and the focus is on the interplay of this big ol’ basket of synths and squiggles. A lot of sonics if that’s how you roll.
@@@ Cassyette: Push and Pull (Cassyette, 2018) Occupying the #1 slot on motherfucking tracks of the week at Line of Best Fit. The shit that always breaks the internet! A big ol’ dance floor banger-tearjerker. Pillowy synths, classic four on the floor or a variation thereof. Back and forth with her man, push and pull. Medium heavy Prince influences in the arrangement as well as some Madonna action. It percolates in the verse mirroring the tension the lyrics describe and then it goes for the explosive chorus. It’s an okay tune and I hope she resolves these issues with her man or woman.
