@@@ Lil B: Black Ken (BasedWorld, 2017) Retro West Coast (San Fran specifically) hip hop I got to after seeing this record on more than one best of 2017 year end lists. When Lil B hits the mic he is both concious and filthy. He will do it with a lady while her friend is in the room. I like the George Clinton vibes, and the retro sonic approach but he’s too nasty for my taste. He don’t want no broke hoes in his bed, you dig? The sounds are freshly retro for sure.
@@@ Miguel: War & Leisure (RCA/Sony, 2017) A mainstream r&b record with guitars, pretty good as far as I’m concerned. He’s going for some Prince fan love on this first tune and I can’t tell if I’m willing to give him the same respect. The second tune Pineapple Skies heads into bubblegum territory which is the wrong way for me. This is more Lionel Richie/Michael Jackson. The first tune is the best and it’s the roughest and it ain’t that rough. I don’t like super taffy sweet r&b. If you do, that’s fine, but not me.
