Music for 9/21/17!!! Sparks, Nick Jonas, Electric Wizard

@@@ Sparks: Missionary Position (N/A, 2017)  I’m not sure if I’ve peeped this band yet as publicists bombard my inbox with the same band over and over ’til I’m confused.  These guys are from the UK and they are wacky.  References might be XTC but more tongue in cheek, and maybe a little Beatles action in the vocal melodies.  I hate to use the Fab Four as a reference as it makes people shit their pants.  It’s an urgent drum beat with tambourine and piano while the guitars are there they don’t drive the tune or mark it as a rock tune.  It’s all clever lyrics regarding the title.

@@@ Nick Jonas: Find You ( , 2017)  Off the Apple Music best of the week playlist.  Regular readers know Imma huge Nick Jonas fan.  He’s mad hot and super talented, a panty quaker in the tradition of Bieber and (gasp!) Harry Styles.  Harry Styles you rule my world!  Jonas is biting Bieber’s ballad style pretty hard.  Oh my the auto speller changed ballad to balls and for a second Nick Jonas was bitting Bieber’s balls.  That’s really too much.  This is more romantic than lustful but I’m sure the video is full of Jonas hotness.  I don’t like the track much but it’s pretty restrained for major label business.

@@@ Electric Wizard: See You in Hell (UMG, 2017)  Retro hard rock a la Black Sabbath in a tune I got to via the Apple Music heavy metal playlist.  Caveman drums, but not modern metal sounding with crunchy, angry flower power style guitars.  Riffs that are old school not classic metal but the first wave back in the day.  The tune is building with more frantic drumming and wah wah guitar.  It’s a familiar formula but they do it well.  Check out War Pigs if you want the classic business.

Music for 9/20/17!!! Sowflo, Resinated, Hippo Campus

@@@ Sowflo: Farmer in Suburbia (Sowflo, 2017) I got an email from a music publicist promoting a post hurricane music benefit in Florida.  There are two dozen plus bands playing and these guys are one of them.  This is on the Sublime side of reggae affairs — light with touches of white boy rock.  A schmear of 311 as well, but I dig the drummer and the trombone player.  Oy this Safari auto spell check is a bit anti-Semitic — I typed schmear and I got schemer.  That’s offensive right?  I can’t wait for the spelling robot chip to be put in my head so we can avoid these situations.

@@@ Resinated: Smoke Signals (Right Coast, 2014). More weed friendly roots reggae from the aforementioned email above.  This opening tune has a little Jimmy Buffett up in its reggae flow, especially the lyrics.  The second tune has a bit of disco doobie in it, oh Lord these guys are gonna be dropping all manner of little flavors.  The singer has some Red Hot Chili Peppers in his business.  He sings better than Chili Pepper Duder but the tone is very similar.   I’m not feeling these lyrics, try them for yourself.

@@@ Hippo Glow: warm glow ep (Grand Jury Music, 2017). These guys are headlining one of the nights at this festival in Cocoa Florida.  They are also near the roots neighborhood but they add other influences including mainstream soft rock and frat boy rock.  They swirl a little prog guitar action into this second tune (clipped below!).  These guys do present a tight rhythm section but they’re not devoted to traditional reggae vibes, they feel comfortable rocking other sounds.  It’s a tad fratty and soft for my taste but that’s just me.

Music for 9/19/17!!! Alice Glass, Evil Invaders, Dan Walsh

@@@ Alice Glass: Alice Glass EP (Loma Vista, 2017) Female fronted space pop off this week’s CFUV playlist email.  The most notable feature of the first tune is how much the low end has been sliced out of the singer’s voice and she sounds about seven years old.  This sort of club music requires slick production — a lot of shine to go with the booty rocking bass.  The record tries to be both dance music and lyric driven songs but I don’t buy these as songs, they leave me feeling not much, if anything.

@@@ Evil Invaders: Feed Me Violence (Napalm, 2017)  Some revved up classic metal/thrash that I got to from the same CFUV playlist email.  The singer is really a singer, and the guitarist(s) provide quite a bit of rhythmic chord chunking as well as the occasional pig squeal.  There are two pre-release tunes up and this second one As Life Slowly Fades follows the same basic premise as the opener.  Fast tempo, lots of drum fills followed by thrash beats, and wicked piercing pig squeals/guitar blasts.

@@@ Dan Walsh: Verging on the Perpendicular (Roksmere Records, 2017)  Some roots/folk music off the CFUV email.  This second tune (clipped below) is banjo playing and singing.  It’s really pleasant playing and the singing is pretty with more modern lyrics.  There are two instrumentals in the three first tunes which is fine as Walsh can surely play the banjo.  For old schoolers.

Music for 9/18/17!!! La Misa Negra, The National, Chronicle Dub Trio, Superfruit

@@@ La Misa Negra: Misa de Medianoche (NAM Entertainment, 2017)  Some Latin music to kick this week off and I got to this record via the CFUV week.  Ah, I remember this record, this is a hot one and it’s a reissue of a 2013 record that made my best of list.  These guys play a manic, partyistic horn driven blend of Colombian cumbia and anything that moves hard and keeps you on the dance floor.  The female singer is great.  Imma gonna leave it at that but I’m happy to see this record has been re-injected and am happy to give it a shout.

@@@ The National: Born to Beg (4AD, 2017)  Yes, you bastards want this track by track full orifice review to continue and I’m loving it as well.  This is a saddie so get ready — he was born to beg for you.  Puh-lease!  It’s driven by a piano part and garnished with a little electro sparkle action.  Unfortunately it doesn’t detract enough from the singer’s work which continues its dolorous, wanky vibe.  There is a subtle background vocal chorus and some guitar noodling to take you out and I can’t decide whether this is a great track to listen to before or after a lobotomy.  It’s precious and important that’s for sure.

@@@ Chronicle Dub Trio: Chapter II: Marcus Garvey (Coated in Dub, 2017)  Some dub covers of classic reggae songs that I got to via this week’s WRIR playlist email.  This first one is Burning Spear’s Marcus Garvey and they raise the tempo and the guitar playing is chicken scratching his way right into my heart.  The organ player and the guitar player trade melodies in this first track with the drummer and bass player holding it down.  They are bassing up my headphones on this third tune Cuss Cuss Dub.  If you’re up for some modern updates on reggae classics with some rock flourishes on the guitar side of things check it out.

@@@ Superfruit: Future Friends (RCA, 2017)  Super sweet mainstream electro off the front page of Apple Music.  Wow, it’s like somebody taking a syringe of sugar and shooting straight into your eyeball.  It’s got a Wham-my feeling to it for sure but more intricate.  They got a faux funky flow working on this second tune — a dash of Earth Wind and Fire and Prince walked by quickly.  The production is slick, the lyrics are very low IQ, and the singing is all right.  Get your bubblegum disco on if you feel the urge!  I bet tRump gets freaky to this kinda business.

Music for 9/15/17!!! Niall Horan, respectful child, A Giant Dog

@@@ Niall Horan: Too Much to Ask (Capitol, 2017) A ‘heartfelt’ piano ballad off the hot tracks section of Apple Music.  It’s sweet and soft like apple butter — think James Taylor on a piano.  I have a feeling the tune is gonna build to a big ass sonic climax — could be wrong.  As far as schmaltzy ballads go this could be schmaltzier.  If this tune was an ice cream cone it would be a plain vanilla in a wafer cone.  I just checked with my friend and a wafer cone is the one with the flat base so it will stand up on a table without assistance but it’s very sweet and not very substantial.  And it’s not artisanal vanilla ice cream, it’s that old school shit that came in in a half gallon box.

@@@ respectful child: ::Searching (Coax, 2017)  Some ambient music off this week’s CFUV playlist email.  The first tune opens up with delayed guitar — I know I’m a total music bitch but I like to keep my ambient music separate from my electric guitars.  This first tune has a lot of echoed guitar.  I’ve skipped ahead and had bites of the second and third tunes and the delayed guitar is the dominant element.  I like delayed guitar but when it’s ambient music it introduces a New Age/arena rock element to the proceedings. I avoid New Age vibes in my music the same way I avoid the plague.  I understand my readers/listeners might be dying for some echoed guitar ambient music so have at it if you roll like that.

@@@ A Giant Dog: Toy (Merge, 2017)  Blurbed as hook driven rock on the Apple Music.  An updated, slightly campy Cheap Trick type of rock.  Two singers, one male/one female singer, some medium crunchy friendly guitars and hooks with a dash of indie.  I would call this one third camp-one third classic rock-one third indie.

Music for 9/14/17!!!! The National, Holy Fuck, Get the Shot, Tee Grizzley

@@@ The National: The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness (4AD, 2017)  This was the first single and I’m back on it for our micro examination of the National’s new ‘opus’. This is such a mainstream tune it makes my teeth hurt.  They should lose their indie cred cards — from the smooth background vocals to the guitar riff, the singer’s posturing and the production of the tune.  I’m reminded once again that their drummer isn’t very good or maybe he’s awesome but he needs a Red Bull.  If there is rock that could be more pretentious and ‘earnest’ than Bono’s blathering, this might be it.  Not straight up boo hiss, maybe just a  boo.  I’d rather listen to Kelly Clarkson talk about her coochie, oh I mean her ‘soft love’.  2.2 million views for this video, yikes, what a waste of bandwidth!

@@@ Holy Fuck: Bird Brains EP (Innovative Leisure, 2017)  I saw this EP on this week’s CFUV playlist email.   This first tune is a crunchy rock track with some electronic garnish.  – some synth pongs, and either weird ass vocals or glitched up vocals.  It’s a pleasantly trashy tune but it’s not moving along as a tune but more of a vibe.  Let’s peep some more.   They’re going ambient in this second tune with a slowed down tempo, some echoed guitar and a thumb piano, and long bass tones.  That was the third tune, Raymond, damn you interwebz and your difficult to use music players.  Back to the second tune and it’s got a sort of industrial menace and chugging feel to it.  I sense an impending sonic explosion.  It has opted for the Nine Inch Nails manly dance groove.  These guys have some cool sounds going but these should be eaten as grooves more than tunes that move and step out and resolve.

@@@ Get the Shot: Infinite Punishment (New Damage, 2017)  Also off this week’s CFUV playlist email.  Some mainstream hard rockin’ metal with big guitars, arena drums, and an extremely pissed singer.  Very pissed and then backed up with huge hardcore chants.  These guys bring high energy while I find the background vocals a tad cheesy they’re a solid outfit.  The drummer in this band should switch over and drive the National around for a bit and show ’em how you muscle up a tune.  The National drummer probably needs a nap anyway.

@@@ Tee Grizzley (feat. Meek Mill): Beef (300 Entertainment, 2017)  Mr. Grizzley don’t sleep on no beef he’s on top of everything.  This is not an anti-vegetarian song, it’s a tune about conflict in the hood and how Mr. Grizzley don’t play.  There are firearms references everywhere and it’s a lot of revenge and aggression fantasies.  I’m not super into it.  The bass is fat and the beats are low, dominated by Grizzley and his beefs.  The tune should be called beefs, plural, as he has many.

Music for 9/13/17!!! The National, Moses Sumner, Meanswell, dvsn

@@@  The National: Walk it Back (4AD, 2017)  We continue with the fully cavity listen of the National’s new opus!  The third tune and it opens up dual synth-y and then it slowly introduces more voices, but all light.  I think I understand what he’s lyricating about — he’s a fuckup but he’s trying not to be?  A little help out there!  I only take up a little of the collapse in space I better cut this off, don’t want to fuck up the place.  That is some high end word salad.  There is a descending guitar tinkle and some sensitive drumming.  I get the gist of the tune — it’s inward and looking kinda inward — there’s a political vocal sample that follows the individual performance.  It talks about a Bush era imperial mindset and I get that but I don’t get how that joins up with the first half of the tune.  Then the sensitive singer returns and I’m feeling like this song maybe should have been two tunes and the coupling makes no sense.

@@@ Moses Sumney: Indulge Me (Jagjaguwar, 2017)  Some strum dee dum indie and high register synth garnish off the Apple Music hot tracks section.  I’m expecting dour singing to commence….wait for it…wait for it…no, winsome, intimate and fragile.  Better than dour and I don’t like the multitrack falsetto but on the whole I can dig the fragile thing.  There’s not much to the tune outside of the vocals so if you’re into the vibe you’ll be happy.  If not, you’ll be hatin’ on it hard.

@@@ Meanswell: Meanswell (Meanswell, 2017)  A big power pop/punk guitar single layered over with r&b/doo woop vocals parts that I got to via a music publicist email.  The singer can actually sing (as opposed to say, Taylor Swift) and the vocal hook revolves around the singer showing his love that he meanswell.  It’s hooky and a tad long and for fans of big friendly, crunchy ass guitars.

@@@ dvsn: Mood ( , 2017)  An exquisitely manicured r&b single off Apple Music’s best of the week playlist.  Excellent sounds from the thick bass, the guitars and a super tight kick drum sound.  Mr. dvsn has his falsetto going overtime in this track and he says in the track look what you made me do.  He must be hanging out with Aryan ice queen Taylor Swift.  I like dvsn’s look what you made me do much more than Tay Tay’s look what you made me do song — far superior sounds and focused arranging as opposed to Swift’s hot white mess.
