@@@ LAL: Find Safety (Coax, 2016). Some electronica off the CFUV volunteer best of 2016. This first tune is pretty minimalist and polished unt-sss or boom-titch as I call it. Oh, there’s a vocalist and she’s got some Nine Simone going. It’s an interesting mash of video game aesthetics, world music threads and some undercover New Age sounds all swirled up.
@@@ Above Top Secret: Above Top Secret (Daps, 2016). Also off the CFUV volunteer best of 2016 list. This first tune is either spoken word with hip hop sauce or left field hip hop with poetry slam sauce. I like the rough, aggressively lo fi feel of the music, but overall I’m not super feeling the music here.
@@@ Henry Threadgill: Old Locks and Irregular Verbs (Pi, 2016). I’m a big fan of Henry Threadgill. Not every album but when he hits it the ball goes a mile. After a solo piano intro the whole ensemble enters including tuba which really sticks out to my ears. I prefer the shorter second piece to the opener. They heat up to a pretty good temperature by the middle of the third tune. I like the improv here but I don’t love it. What you like is very personal so peep it for yourself.
