@@@ Preoccupations: Preoccupations (Jagjaguwar, 2016). Some post punk off Flood’s best of 2016 list. I don’t know who the hell Flood is I’m just trying to find some records. This first tune has a dark vibe, ’80s influenced pop punk rock. Let’s peep more. Oh, we’re not referencing the ’80s here, we’re diving right in. Yikes, I’m not down with that. Low voiced singer, kinda mopey, growly bass lines, chorused electric guitar, it’s in that vein.
@@@ Ricky Eat Acid: Talk to You Soon (Terrible Records, 2016). What the hell, check out Entertainment Weekly’s top records of the year. I like this better than the mope-fest above. It opens up slightly chopped and a little tinkly and looped. I expect some four on the floor in a minute but we’ll see. Ah, this is more of an indie dance beat with some symphonic touches when the intro clears. This second tune, So Nice to See You, is more openly funky with a tight, wanking bass line, some pops and skitters. More string parts here, that’s not really working for me. Peep one mo. I’m finding this to be a blend åof very cool, abstract sounds with some cheese sauce over the top.
@@@ Noname: Telefone (Neoname, 2016). Oh, Entertainment Weekly getting out there with some left field self-released hip hop. Imagine dat. This is sort of a jazzy, black hippie, laid-back opening tune. She’s got a little Stevie Wonder space child going here, this is a pretty nice first tune. Let’s peep more. Oooh, this second tune opens up with flavor — some chill electric organ, a nice hi hat pattern and some super flavorful black church singing. I like that she’s rocking this vibe but it’s not all soft and mushy. If you dig Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul classic business Noname might work for you. Imma swing back on this record.
@@@ Ray LaMontagne: Ouroboros (RCA, 2016) I saw someone rave about this record early this year and it’s on the EW list so I thought I would throw some ears at it. It opens up slow and pompitus but it will return. This is wise white boy space folk rock. Pink Floyd and Paul Simon lovechild. Ah, this second tune opens up with a pretty standard epic guitar riff and breathy vocals. Hmm, Imma give one more peep then I’m heading elsewhere. More big rock riffs in this third song. I will listen as I finish up proof reading (which I do poorly) but then I’m outy.
