Music for 12/6/16!!! Meshuggah, High Spirits, Khemmis, Psalm Zero

@@@ Meshuggah: The Violent Sleep of Reason (Nuclear Blast, 2016).  We gotta counteract all that soft NPR style music I’ve been peeping on Ted Gioia’s best of 2016.  This record is #2 on Pop Matters best of metal for 2016 and this first tune is kachunking on steroids.  There are also melodic guitar parts and the singer is post-hardcore pissed but not quite full Neanderthal.  I guess these guys are longstanding metal giants and I must say they’re impressively rough working the metal sounds with creativity and urgency.  They get into some unusual rhythmic bouncing about.  Check this out if you’re up for a few shots to the dome.

@@@ High Spirits: Motivator (High Spirits, 2016) An ’80s throwback metal record before metal went full meltdown snarl.  I’m not a huge fan of the ’80s metal but this is pretty solid shit.  Let’s peep a bit more.  This isn’t really my style but it’s well done.  Something about these epic, operatic old school singers really bothers me but the drumming and the guitar playing are tighter than a nun’s pussy.  I was trying to weave a Trump/President GropeNutz reference in here with the nun’s pussy reference but I couldn’t make it work.  I have nothing either for or against tight nun pussy, I just want to make that clear.  I’m sure Trump loves tight nun pussy and would just grab it!  If only someone would grab that dickface by that hall of fame combover and toss him back to whatever sewer he crawled out of.

@@@ Khemmis: Hunted (20 Buck Spin, 2016)  I got this record from the same Pop Matters best metal of 2016 and this record is blurbed as fuzz infest doom riffs, which sounds a bit like a cereal.  Little fuzzy riffs, soy milk, blueberries, pow!  They do sport an impressively scuzzy guitar sound but a sort of regal singer, a real Knights of the round table kinda fella.  This is some hydroponic metal for fussy fuzz lovers.  As I said in a previous pocket review these regal, quasi-operatic singers are a stretch for me.  Big stretch.  Khemmis sounds like it would be a great name for a non-garbanzo based, Monsanto engineered form of hummus.  A little Roundup, some tahini, and some pulverized….you fill in the blank.

@@@ Psalm Zero: Stranger to Violence (Profound Lore, 2016).  Another record off Pop Matters best metal of 2016.  This first tune (clipped below) is a proggy, indie, epic heavy affair.  It’s more like Styx than Converge.  Again the singer is a problem for me — literate lyrics, portentous tone of voice.   The guitars are growly and mostly polite and there are full synth parts to these tunes.  Really not my style, but it’s not for me to say what other folks should listen to.
