Music for 11/17/16!!! Fergie, Gatecreeper, Bahama Soul Club, Twist

@@@  Fergie: Life Goes On (Interscope, 2016).  Man I have been missing the shit out of the Spice Girls but I have to wait no longer for some super cliche vocals and a shopping mall reality.  I fucked up, she’s not an ex-Spice Girl, she’s a former Black Eyed Pea.  These lyrics are worse than new country pickup cliches — just horribly shallow shit.  Oh fuck this is awful, blech.  I would rather listen to dogs fornicate.  Pee Yew, stinky.

@@@ Gatecreeper: Sonoran Deprivation (Relapse, 2016).  I had to have an influx of anti-social metal to cancel out that Fergie nugget.  Yikers!  I saw this record listed on this week’s CFUV weekly playlist email and it does open up with some serious guitar pummeling and thrash drumming.  And don’t forget the caveman vocalist, put a Santa hat on him this Christmas to make his grunts a bit more family friendly.  In the last third of this opening tune, Craving Flesh they get into some pretty classic metal monster walking midtempo stomp action.  The second tune, Sterilized jumps into a guitar threedle and then the percussive guitar/kick dome thwacking. Regular readers know my thoughts on these caveman singers — I’m not huge into that vocal style, but the band is kicking out some hot thrash.

@@@ Bahama Soul Club: Havana ’58 (Buyu, 2016).  A lounge-y Cuban record I got to via the recent arrivals section of the WRIR weekly email.  It’s buttery smooth and while I wouldn’t say that this isn’t Cuban music, it is new school and not what I think of when I think of classic Cuban music.  This is hipster electro Cuban music and if that appeals to you, have at it yo.  It also sports a lot of guest vocalists so the vibe will jump around a bit as the guests do their thing.

@@@ Twist: Spectral (Buzz, 2016)  Drum machines and grungy guitars on this opening track.  I got to this record via this week’s CFUV weekly playlist email.  In addition to the two elements above there are delightful female vocals lending a smooth pretty vibe to the tune.  I can’t tell if this second tune sports a drum machine or a drummer, ooh I think it’s a drummer but we’re not talking Keith Moon here, it’s pretty straight ahead.  Pretty with a tad of crunch is where we’re at with this record.
