@@@ Rafter: XYZ (Joyful Noise, 2016). Well, this record opens up catchy which is an oddity. Not catchy in terms of an unheard mash of sounds but a well put together arrangement that pulls you in. A little indie elecronic, a little Beatles, a little Neutral Milk Hotel (which should be cheese by now). Let’s peep more with crossed fingers. This second tune Lonely World goes in more of an ’80s pop direction, oh that hurts a little bit. Still more than a bit weird but more bounce. While this does not end up working for me, these guys are doing really solid work on their arrangements — these aren’t pre-schoolers with Casios and Tascam digital 4-tracks. If you like the indie electronic with touches of psych and an ’80s pop thread these guys will work for you.
@@@ Girl Tears: No Fairth/Void (Sinderlyn, 2016). Some retro ’90s power pop with some retro ’80s Brit punk thrown in. Drummer is working over time, guitar player on top of the power chords and a straight ahead male singer. It’s a 1:48 nugget so there’s no way to get bogged down. This second tune, Void, is :58 and I like this one as the singer is more unhinged. I enjoy listening to people lose their shit. Commando music, get in get out.
@@@ Upon a Burning Body: Straight from the Barrio (Sumerian, 2016). Some metal en-Espanol off the Apple Music new music section. This first tune is full throttle with a lot of Linkin Park and a smidge of Rage Against the Machine and few traditional stringed instrument breaks. They like to party all night long, rolling to the break of dawn. This second tune opens up with the lyric ‘You can’t break me because I’m already broken’. Meh. I give the energy an A-, I give the music B+ for execution and C+ for originality, and a C for the lyrics.
@@@ Maty Noyes: Noyes Complaint EP (Republic, 2016) Some electro pop soul off the Apple music new music section. As far as music to buy blue jeans by this is not so bad. As music that you can feel something, well not so much. It appears from Ms. Noyes flow on the mic that she has the hottie knob turned up high with some coyness dialed in. Let’s peep one more tune before moving on. I give the sounds a B+ and Ms. Noyes a B-.
