@@@ Vaudou Game: Kidayu (Hot Casa, 2016). Some African funk off this week’s WRIR weekly chart. This first tune Natural Vaudou is small ensemble, tightly knit playing. I believe that I have come to hate the big, macho Afrobeat horn sections and that I enjoy the smaller African groups. This is guitar, bass, drums, organ and a vocalist and it’s hot. Let’s peep more and hope it doesn’t fade. The horns do make an appearance on this second tune Cherie Nye but it’s not Fela Afrobeat style. The songs thus far appear split between small funk band numbers and numbers with horns but Imma have to swing back on this record to listen to the whole thing when I get time.
@@@ Beats Antique: Shadowbox (Beats Antique, 2016). Also off this week’s WRIR email. I’m not sure what to expect from this record given the wide variety of guests on it, from the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to South East Asian musicians. This first tune is notable for it’s huge hand drums and the Indian vocalist (I think). The second tune is a Balkan funk/hip hop number so I think this is going to be a world music concept record and I don’t like these stylistic grab baskets. I prefer a record to be full of focused and related tunes — these far ranging records leave me with superficial impressions of sounds and styles when I want to go deep.
@@@ Piers Faccini: Bring Down the Wall (Six Degrees, 2016). A world music single that I got to via the very same WRIR weekly email cuz those folks have taste. Except maybe with regards to this tune which is a sort of Dave Matthews/world music mash. Sort of soft and New Age with world music tinges. Imma guessing Faccini is Brazilian or Portugese, let me search on that. Wrong, he lives in London the son of an Italian and a Brit. Sorry to hear about the Brexit, not really, #fishandchipsuberalles, #completenonsense.
@@@ Aquaserge: Guerre EP (Crammed Discs, 2016). I love Konono No. 1 so much that I pay the label back by checking out all their releases. This first tune is a kind of cracked cabaret/French hipster tune. Rock band instrumentation with a little bit of Captain Beefheart swirled up in there. This second tune, Les vacances has a more rock feel to it, and they have an above average guitar player but I’m not really feeling this record. Check it for yourself and I don’t freak out about people liking music I don’t like and vice versa.
