10/4/16: Money Chicha, The Thermals, Dowda Jobarteh, Dubkasm

@@@ Money Chicha: Echo En Mexico (Money Chicha, 2016).  Some rocking old guitar driven Latin music I got to via the WRIR weekly playlist email.  Very similar to the Chicago outfit Dos Santos and they have a record coming out very soon as well.  The stars here are the conga player and the guitar player.  Let’s peep more.  If you’re in the mood for some muscular instrumental party music these guys will hook you up.  Big ups for the percussionist, he/she’s working hard people.

@@@ The Thermals: Hey You (Saddle Creek, 2016).  A single I got to after I saw Marc Maron namecheck this rock outfit in his weekly confessional.  Big wall of guitar with a shout along vocal chorus.  This is party music for beer fueled bearded hipsters — I dig it all right and I bet it’s pretty smoking live.  The B side is a punky fresh cover of Jefferson Airplane’s classic tune White Rabbit.  Rawkin’ it!

@@@ Dowda Jobarteh/Stefan Pasburg: Duo (Ilk, 2016).  I was looking for Jobarteh’s new record out on Stern’s that I saw on WRIR’s weekly email but the Apple Music turned up this duo record.  I see from another record title on the page that Jobarteh is from Gambia and he’s a string player and they have a real rocking vibe in this first tune.  Let’s peep more.  The second tune, Dancing in Your Head, features the same vibe and the drummer here is going full rock star.  Big arena fills, solos and a distortion pedal on whatever stringed African instrument Jobarteh is playing.  I prefer the rocking flavors of Noura Mint Seymali and her shredding husband and I urge folks to check out their new recording out on Glitterbeat.

@@@ Dubkasm: Untold Stories EP (Dubkasm, 2016)  Some old school roots reggae I got to after perusing the WRIR weekly email.  This first tune (clipped below) is dominated by the singer, some nice dub echoes, and a reverbed melodica.  I really dig the marimba type instrument they have working here.  I’m going to replace the opening track with the second tune which is a dub because it’s super flavorful and folks should check it out.  Very spacious and I like a bunch of the dub on this EP.  Check it out.
