@@@ Eight Bells: Landless (Eight Bells, 2016). A continuation from Saturday’s brief metal fest. These guys are praised for forging a new style of metal over here. These guys are praised for making the black metal record of the year. I just read the definition of black metal at Wikipedia and I don’t think this is a black metal record. It’s very polished, the tempos are not super fast and there is a lot of beautiful singing which strongly contrasts with the ugliness of usual black metal ‘vocal’ stylings. It’s a prog/metal record but prog isn’t a cool term unless you’re way into prog. It really is an epic, huge sounding heavy music record so if you’re into that have at it.
@@@ Gorguts: Pleiades’ Dust (Gorguts, 2016). A 1 track just shy of 33 minute track out of the same link as above. Metal Injection! We’re opening up with a little dark atmospheric squiggly action, ah there’s the smash. There is a mathiness to this record, but the record is much rougher than the Eight Bells and that really changes the listener experience. This is a two guitar attack and there’s a lot of guitar squall/noise to feast on here. I’ve clicked around on this big ass track and it’s smart and brutal — there’s a compositional feel to the track, they’re playing their assess off, and it’s punishing. Good shit.
@@@ Sumac: What One Becomes (Thrill Jockey, 2016). Five big ass slabs of doom metal I got to via Metal Injection. Metal Injection! There’s a real CIA black site feel to the vocals — long distant screams and waves and waves of guitar distortion. And like a sadistic torturer, these guys take their time. The tortures soul has left the dungeon and he’s going full caveman right up on the microphone. This drummer is working and he’s working with an ill bass player — this is pretty nasty business. It’s really well performed and sounds great so if this is a style you like check ’em out.
