@@@ Mike and Rich: Expert Knob Twiddlers (Planet Mu, 2016). I found this record in the Apple experimental music area. I don’t know if you’ve seen the filthy animated spy series Archer but you should check it out. He constantlys asks ‘are we doing phrasing?’ These cats are raising my expectations calling their record Expert Knob Twiddlers and it’s also slightly perverted, no? This first tune is some nerdy funk with a positively simple boom bap beat and funk keyboard sauce over the top. Let’s peep more but I haven’t heard the expertise. Show me something Mike and Rich. Second tune, not much expertise here. Mike and Rich, don’t fuck with me, Imma give you one more tune. This record should have been called ‘Starting out in the World of Funk’ or ‘Two White Chimps at the Computer’ or ‘Hey, hey wonder bread and boloney sandwiches people!!’
@@@ Phish: Breath and Burning (Phish, 2016) I think somebody might have to put a fork into Phish because it has gonna all soft and cheesy. They used to have a hippie virtuosic playing thing going but that is not present here. It’s strummed acoustic guitar, cliche lyrics about we’re all made of sand (yeah, yeah) and a horn line that should be returned to its original composer.
You can stream it up over here at NPR (the target demographic for this treacle)
@@@ Daniel Lanois: Goodbye to Language (Anti-, 2016). I find Daniel Lanois’ records to be a bit hit or miss but when he hits it it goes a mile. Thus far I’m two pieces in on this instrumental ambient record and the sounds are mostly processed guitar with ambient organ. I’m feeling this second tune Time On. It’s lightly chopped and reversed and multitrack and trippy. If you’re into layered and processed guitar music Mr. Lanois will hook you up on this record. There certainly are some transcending passages to be heard here.
@@@ Violence: A Ruse of Power (NON Worldwide, 2016). Blurbed as a combo platter of black metal and ambient r&b. I think they might have gotten a bit extended on this blurb. There are a lot of metallic sounds floating around here but I’m not feeling black metal, it’s more similar to industrial music but way slowed down. I like some of the sounds, it’s been poorly blurbed, and it’s a bit mopey for my taste.
