@@@ Vieux Kante: Sans Commentaire (Sans Commentaire, 2014). This African musician has a new record out that I saw listed on the WRIR weekly charts, but this 2014 effort is up on Apple Music. The first tune is a couple of string players letting it rip with a singer. I had to search but this is yet another great musician from Mali. They’ve distorted one of the stringed instruments so it sounds a bit guitar-esque. Thus far there is no rhythm section to this record which highlights the string playing more but I do love African drumming. Imma gonna have to swing back on this record as it has an understated yet rich flavor.
@@@ Mendrugo: Emboniga (Fire Records, 2016). I saw this band on this week’s All Music weekly email but only this one tune is up on Apple Music. It’s labelled as indie folk but as these guys are a collaboration between an American musician and a couple of Spaniards this is indie folk plus. Imma click thru to Bandcamp as I like this tune — a little shambly with some really nice string playing, plus clarinet and a low horn, tuba I think. This has a lo-fi, non-American hippie feel that some folks might like.
@@@ Ben Chatwin: Heat & Entropy (Ba Da Bing Records, 2016). This is labelled as expermental ambient on this week’s All Music weekly email and it has an octopus on the cover so hopes are running high at this laptop. It opens up xylophone-y with a somewhat ominous bass before a relaxed wave of electronic squiggle action and white noise washes over the proceedings. I like this tune Gravitational Bodies better than the opener and thus far Chatwin’s music appears to be centered around nice ambient work that accompanies some performance.
@@@ Lil Durk: Lil Durk 2X (Def Jam, 2016). Off last week’s All Music weekly email. This first tune is gangsta r&b with mostly synth centered arrangements, a slow beat, and Autotuned singing. I don’t know if I’ve heard this loverboy gangsta mash. I like his rhymes and I like the bass sounds, but I’m not feeling the arrangements. He’s a gangsta version of Drake.
