@@@ MILF: God Save the Teen (La Concertini di Musica Brutta, 2016) Some rough proggy punk splatter in the vein of Frank Zappa. Lots of herky jerky to the arrangements, a high quality drummer and song titles like Barbie the chubby, Cum to Daddy, and God Shave the Teen. Anti-social bile, god the horror! My problem with this style of music is that it’s either not smart enough and kinda clunky or it’s too smart and doesn’t have enough roughness to be convincing. Imma gonna have to circle back to this record but from what I can hear thus far these guys thread the needle with a good balance of intelligence and muscle. The drummer is an animal.
@@@ Dirty Heads: Dirty Heads (Five Seven, 2016) Hip hop reggae off the Apple Music front page banner. I don’t like it much right out of the gate, too fratty and poppy. I like the low end and some of the sounds but this is too mindless, cliche and fake rootsy. #boo #hiss
@@@ Above Top Secret: Above Top Secret (Daps, 2016). Some left field hip hop off this week’s CFUV weekly email. Defiant female MC on this first tune over midtempo skitter and a lot of pleasantly disorienting delayed sounds. What starts as an interesting vibe kinda flounders so let’s check out the next banger. There’s some standard EDM arpeggiated synth weaving in and out of the double female rappers. Each tune is preceded by an intro which I have not checked out. I like a bunch of the sounds here but I’m not super feeling the MCs. Check fo yourself.
@@@ Paul Reddick: Ride the One (Stony Plain Recording, 2016). Roots rock/country off this week’s CFUV weekly playlist email. The guitar playing is featured heavily in these first two tunes. Lots of Ry Cooder inspired style playing and Reddick’s gravelly voice. These first two tunes are burners so I’m expecting a slow down for this third tune Mourning Dove. And right on time. I don’t have anything against this record but it’s not working for me.
