@@@ Britney Spears: Make Me (featuring G-Eazy) (RCA, 2016). I love the Britney! And I saw some press that the new hot thing is to not have hot clubs nor slow jams but somewhere in between. What is known in Buddhism as the Middle Path and I’m sure Britney is up on Siddartha’s teachings. Oh, she’s panting on this one and she sounds about 8 years old from the vocal processing so that’s a bit perverse. And the tune breaks out in the chorus nicely. I like the little guitar wangle and she has a decent vocal melody in spots and the production is really sweet in spots but I have trouble feeling it when her voice is so processed. I bet they spent ours on this wall of Britney vocal ooh oohs (ooze?).
@@@ Wolfpack: Lycanthro Punk (Southern Lord, 2016). Some heavy off this week’s heavy metal email newsletter. It’s a re-issue (thanks Googletube) It opens up epic with big big drums and epic guitar washes with some squeals squeezed over the top of this crusty cupcake. And that’s just the intro before the punk onslaught in the second song. Tres Motorhead-ish with more metal muscle. The third tune Powerpigs continues with the forward, head against brickwall banging. These guys are tighter than Britney Spears’ abs for sure. If you’re a person who likes that punk/metal blend these guys do it really well.
@@@ Clams Casino: 32 Levels (Columbia, 2016). Yo, this is some of the sleepiest gangsta rap I heard in a long ass time. A lot of whoozy synths, no skittery beats, some fat bass but not gangsta fat. This third tune All Night is firmer and I dig the birdsong samples but I’m not sure I’m a fan of Mr. Casino as this record just bounces from one MC to the next so it’s like a big ol’ hip hop pu pu platter.
@@@ Dark Funeral: Where Shadows Forever Reign (Century, 2016). A classic metal/thrash record with an orc singer that I got to via the CFUV tracking email. This record is notable for the drumming and the threedled and buzzy guitar sound. The second tune, As One We Shall Conquer, takes the tempo down a notch but with orc right out front, oops now the caveman enters. Both of the metal singing styles that I don’t like. I really like the drummer and the guitar player here.
