@@@ Fredo Santana: Fredo Mafia (Savage Squad/Empire, 2016). Full on funky gangster hip hop off the Apple Music front page. Super tasty fat bass, medium skittery beats, and offensive lyrics. The arrangements are ridiculously good in the bass/beats area with tiny bits of synth garnish, but I can’t really get with these lyrics.
@@@ Denny Zeitlin: Early Wayne (Sunnyside, 2016). A solo piano record of early Wayne Shorter compositions that I got to from a twert by Ted Gioia. I like this first tune, he’s got a loose feel to his playing. Oh, this is really nice. I’m on the fourth tune and I really like the way Zeitlin plays. Imma gonna swing back on this record to listen more closely. There’s not much to say about a solo piano record — solo jazz records are about a player really stretching and expressing himself/herself without the limitations of playing with other folks. Zeitlin plays solo really well.
@@@ Ian William Craig: Centres (Copyright Control, 2016). Some experimental electronic music off this week’s All Music weekly email. Just as some folks don’t like peanut butter mixed up in their chocolate, I don’t like vocals in my experimental electronic music as it lends a New Age vibe to the proceedings that I have trouble with. Let’s peep the second tune. He’s got a couple nice ambient noise loops going here, I’ll give him that. Eh, he’s got the same formula on the second song and the third tune as well. Kinda a deal breaker for me. If he had used fewer vocals and mangled them more I might have been up for it.
@@@ Boris: Pink (Sargent House, 2016). Some alt-metal off this week’s All Music weekly notable release email. This first tune sounds like a sedated U2 tune with some very nice delayed guitar and a thick, straight beat. Oh, there’s the crush a big ass wave of syrupy guitar noise and faded vocals a la Jane’s Addiction. Not super metal to my ears, more heavy indie. Let’s peep more. I can’t tell if this is a reissue of a new biscuit. Help me out people!! I like the guitar sounds a whole bunch. It jumps around from shoegaze, to Red Hot Chili Pepper heavy funk to hardcore so I find that a bit confusing. Otherwise, for those folks who can’t stoop down to scoop up real, foul and anti-social heavy metal you get this.
