7/6/16: Daniel Romano, Black Absinthe, Blind Lemon Peel

@@@ Daniel Romano: Mosey (New West, 2016).  Also off this week’s CFUV weekly email.  This label New West usually does country and alt-country but this first tune is barely hanging in that genre.  It’s pretty indie with some quirkwith some sly psych sounds tucked up in there.  Let’s peep more and see what comes of it.  Oh it busts out into a pop chorus so more evidence there.  And a string section!  The second tune opens up like an old hippe blues number with Romano’s Dylan-esque twang slouching across the sonic landscape.  I don’t mean slouching in a bad way!  I give this points for quirk as well as for bounce (despite my use of the word slouch — how does a nasal voice travel?)

@@@ Black Absinthe: Early Signs of Denial EP (Black Absinthe, 2016).  Some heavy music off this week’s CFIV weekly email.  Maybe because they have the word black in the band title I thought we were in for some wicked anti-socail heavy metal but this is more high end old school cock rock.  Guns ‘N Roses and The Cult love-baby.  The guitars are pretty monster riffing and chording as well as a tad cheesy.  The singer is most definitely a manly lederhosen type of fella.  The third tune is called Berj Khalifa which is the biggest skyscraper in the world and I think that’s weird.

@@@ Blind Lemon Peel: Don’t Tear My Clothes (Izabiz, 2015).  A new school, possibly jokey blues record I got to via the indie music blog Indiepulse.  I mean Blind Lemon Peel, c’mon.  The second tune I’m So Horny (the crack of dawn ain’t safe) may also be a clue.  However, the singer has flow and is entertaining — more so than many singers of legitimately serious blues records.  Full instrumentation here — guitars, piano/organ, horn section, female background singers.  It’s corny and the guitar tones could use some work, but I give it a solid B for entertainment value.

  1. That Romano’s one of my favourite records this year. Same day that came out he put out another record with his band Ancient Shapes, altogether different and nearly equally enjoyable (to me).

    • ola mr. whirly. due to your deep love of music and your reasonableness as a human being i went back and checked out almost all of that daniel romano record. not the second one you mentioned. i like a bunch of things about it, he’s a really good song arranger and i like the bass playing a whole bunch, but the record does not work for me the same way it works for you. if i get a chance i will peep the ancient shapes recording. i hope you’re having a good summer and rock on.
