6/10/16: Eli Paperboy Reed, Whitney, Usher

@@@ Eli Paperboy Reed: My Way Home (Yep Roc, 2016).  You can’t get all hyped up on the first tune but Reed comes out swinging on the first tune Hold Out.  The full soul/rock experience.  Uptempo, thwacking snare, crunchy vocals, vampin’ organ, etc.  The second tune is pretty tough as well.  I’m not a huge fan of the white boy soul, but this is holding up thus far.  It has an interesting ’60s rock thread to it that I’m hard pressed to describe.  An excellent guitar player and Reed is working the mic hard and shit.  Not nearly as slack and baked as the Daptone soul, and not weak as a lot of other white soul.  Imma gonna have to swing back on this record and peep the whole thing.

@@@ Whitney: Light Upon the Lake (Secretly Canadian, 2016).  I usually stay away from any white boy indie marketed as ‘haunting’ but these guys are the Featured New Artist on Apple Music.  To me Nick Drake is haunting, you can hear the depression coming off that dude’s music.  This is orchestrated baroque indie with nice sounds and a singer that is upper register and wistful.  The second tune gets more uptempo and happier, what a shame.  I think the arrangements and the sounds are outshining the singer.  Nice horns, piano, strings, the full monty.  I’ve peeped parts of four tunes, two slow ones and two uptempo and I think the slower ones are more effective and moving than the uptempo numbers.

@@@ Usher: Crush (RCA, 2016).  Sexy motherfucker Usher back with a ‘haunting’ electro single.  Big reverb and super spacious sounds lend a ‘haunting’ quality to the proceedings.  I like the falsetto melody and the simple beat, but I don’t feel the production on this tune — it’s like a cheesy Hollywood movie.
