@@@ Dodheimsgard: A Umbra Omega (Peaceville, 2015). Some weirdass metal off the last playlist email I got from CFUV. The singer sounds a whole bunch like Captain Beefheart — kinda unhinged with some art prog flavors. Oh, now the first tune has broken down into a piano/sax/vocal wail. Flying the freak flag, sweet. And now back to the prog metal. These are all 10 minute plus bangers so buckle in there’s gonna be a lot of jamming and switching shit up. I’m checking out the first five minutes of the third tune God Protocol Axiom and it’s a continuation of the same formula. Super big respect for playing whatever the fuck you want to play.
@@@ Jigmastas: Resurgence (ik7/BBE, 2016) Underground rap off the All Music weekly email. This first tune is instrumental and it’s mostly synth based and a pretty modern drum sound. I think this is the warmup and the MCs will be on the mics soon. This tune, Too Ill, features steady rhymes, brisk but not full spitting and tough with gangster free rhymes. I like both the beats and the sonics in this third tune, Magnetize. A wambly funky bass, some stringy twerps and a high stepping snare-o-centric beat. Full New York style hip hop here. I tried to attach the video for the track Magnetize but alas it is not available on the GoogleToob.
@@@ Steve Dawson: Solid States and Loose Ends (Black Hen, 2016). A roots/blues record in the Ry Cooder tradition. Lots of tasty Americana/rock guitar playing and slack, slightly baked vocal styles. This is also for fans of John Hiatt. Lovely guitar playing, literate lyrics. If you’re into that, check him out.
@@@ Flume: Skin (Mom & Pop, 2016) A bombastic EDM record off this week’s All Music notable releases. Any EDM album that opens up with the club diva, a pan flute and a chainsaw synth is halfway home to being a total wank. Let’s not kid ourselves, wanking is super popular so this wank could be huge. Not that I’m calling this Flute guy a Huge Wanker. On this opener, he’s got a pretty chunked up beat, with a blasted kick drum sound, some skittery hats, but it’s the synth work that is rubbing me the wrong way. It’s too chopped and sounds like cheap Chinese food. Let’s move to the next track which is a ballad opening up with a dreamy female singer and plenty of electro glitter behind her. The synths are tastier on this track — they sound like lasagna noodles wamping down the stairs. Not all the way through at points, in the chorus. He’s got a killer kick sound and she sounds like she need to head to the bathroom for some post-panting masturbatory cleanup.
