@@@ Timo Vollbrecht: Fly Magic (Berthold Records, 2016). A jazz record recommended by the gent at Bird is the Worm. I’m a little skeptical of an album called Fly Magic, but I’ll give it a fair listen. In the first tune I appreciate the rock-ish guitar to go with the ultra-smooth sax sound. The tunes are interesting but lack fire. I like a bunch of the sounds on the record though I think the overall sonic vibe of the record is a bit too flavored coffee soft for my taste but if you like restrained, pretty improv this will fit your bill. And I don’t mean that in a pejorative sense either — some people like the fire, some people like the bologna and white bread. F’real.
@@@ Blackball: Blackball (Sorry State, 2016). I saw this hardcore band mentioned on the Twerter by the pretentious NYT Twat Ben Ratliff. He said listening to this music is like ‘inhaling some kind of straight-to-the-point vapor.’ Whatever boring dude. It’s a pretty crunchy mix, distorted drums, voice, guitar, you name it people. I like it, the distortion that is. I’m thinking the drummer takes the medal for this band, he’s really driving the bus here, the singer is pretty much eating the microphone and the guitar player puts in some good work.
@@@ 47Soul: Shamstep EP (Shamstep, 2016). Some Middle Eastern electronica out o’ Palestine that I got to via a music publicist. Big supporters of Palestinian rights in our house. I’m also a big fan of Omar Souleyman (Syrian, I think) and this is a couple of notches down from Souleyman dance floor exhausters. There’s some real nice circular keyboard playing and I like the hand drumming, but I’m not as big a fan of the singers who rock both English and Arabic. Check out Souleyman’s music if you’ve had an espresso recently.
