@@@ Islands: Should I Remain Here at Sea (Manque Music, 2016). I think these guys are a rare outfit that manages to actually be a rock band that uses a lot of synths. It’s pretty straightforward in terms of song structure, but the singer has flavor and they swing it more than most white boy outfits. They have some pretty subversive lyrics for such a mainstream outfit. They don’t actually rock a lot of synths on this record thus far, it’s pretty much straightforward friendly rock with a tad of quirk. Cubicle dwellers and norms should check out this record.
@@@ Cattle Decapitation: The Anthropocene Extinction (Metal Blade, 2016). Some big, big metal I got to via the music blog Indiepulse. What I thought was some pretty pretty mainstream metal has descended to full smash and batter in this first tune. Oy what a brutal drummer. I don’t usually dig the caveman singers but this guys is pretty flavorful in a rough, Neanderthal. Oh there’s a big operatic chorus so this record is going to be a blend of high metal and full spankshow. Oh this drummer is ridonculus. I better turn this down before the neighbors call the po po. This second tune, The Prophets of Loss, takes it up a notch, if that’s possible. Full props to the drummer and the guitar player here as they must be in all manner of stimulants to make this music, but I gotta take a break and go rob a 7-11. I need a giant Slushie to get my blood sugar up.
@@@ Fruit Bats: Absolute Loser (Easy Rider, 2016). For a record with such a bummer title this is some pretty bouncy music. Strummed acoustic, a little melodic piano and a bittersweet melody on the opener. Very Squeeze-y. I’m on the third song now and it’s got some interesting country slide guitar playing but the vibe is a bit too poppy/mainstream for my tatste.
@@@ Jeremih: Oui ( , 2016). Off Apple Music’s r&b page but this tune features a lot of hip hop elements. Skittery beats, almost rapping vocals, and a really fat distorted kick drum. This is inspired by Drake who rides that hip hop/r&b line but I prefer this guy’s singing voice to Drake’s. Drake be low energy. It’s hooky but a tad repetitive. Holy fuck, 72 million views for this bedroom banger. I mean, it’s all right, but 72 million worthy? Oy.
