@@@ The Lickshots: The Lickshots (Rockers Int’l, 2016) Some old school dub off this week’s WRIR playlist email. I can’t find any info on this outfit on the DuckDuckGo or the Google but this first tune is super sticky and dub-a-licious! Righteous flute work, horns, and classic dub sounds including melodica. This second tune, Loyal Way is more regal with a big horn line. I’m on the third tune and I’m into it. More melodic than a lot of old school dub with excellent drumming, interesting guitar work and even sax. Nice tones to be found here as well, I’m almost sure this record will be on my best of list for this year but I’m dying to know if this is a re-issue or a band this is functioning now.
@@@ Beyonce: All Night (Columbia, 2016). The second to last tune off Beyonce’s solid B record that’s being hailed as a work of genius. This tune has old school r&b guitar, some horn lines, rock drums, and Queen B. There is a dub like bass line which is a little interesting. As I’ve listened closely to this whole record as somebody who loves music, I think Beyonce tends to think vocal tricks/wizardry and production/arrangements are more important than soulful expression. She can sing, no doubt but she often stacks too many tracks and there are spots where she goes from simple singing to a trick seciton. There’s a chorus here where she goes into a very rapid almost rapping section and it’s technically impressive but it doesn’t work great for the song. Here’s a cover of the tune cuz Beyonce gets paid people, she ain’t up on the GooglePimp fo free. And that’s her choice.
@@@ Japanese Breakfast: Pyschopomp (Yellow K Records, 2016). Some indie synth gaze I got to via a music publicist email. Female singers, cloud synths, some sparkle, some classic strummed indie guitar. They sound like The Cure with a vag. I like the singer, not all the reverb on her voice, I”m a bit distracted by the sparkle — there are these synth washes at various points in the tunes. It’s all right. This third tune leans more towards the slack, guitar indie so maybe from here on out it’s gonna be rocking more. I won’t be there to peep it, but it looks like it’s going that way.
