@@@ Beyonce: Freedom (Columbia, 2016). We’re coming down the homestretch on this Beyonce record. This is a rocker, much better than the Jack White rocker early in the record. In fact, if I was in charge of sequencing Beyonce’s record I would switch this tune with that one. She sounds believable in the chorus and the arrangement is much stronger than that wet cardboard Jack White dittie. And Kenrick Lamar does a much better job with his guest spot. I guess she’s trying to wrap up the record with some sort of strong cathartic tune, but the reality is a lot of folks won’t make it this far if you got early biscuits in the lineup.
@@@ Al Scorch: Circle Round the Signs (Bloodshot, 2016). I try to check out Bloodshot releases because they make interesting choices. This record opens up with a uptempo, quasi-punk) string number with a banjo player that sounds like his/her arm is about to fall off and a working overtime fiddle player. Scorch’s voice is engaging and a little desperate in a good way. There’s some interesting singing and playing going on here and I’m gonna swing back on this record and check it out more when I have time.
@@@ Meghan Trainor: Thank You (Epic, 2016). I don’t know about the rest of you but I can’t take a shit or surf the intertoobz without seeing Meghan Trainor namechecked. If you’re up for a white girl awkwardly attempt to be a black girl then this young woman is for you. There are some nice sounds on this first tune, but the lyrics are fucking stupid, and there are too many background vocals that just crowd the shit and make the whole thing sound like a dirty diaper. Put the mic away girl and go get a veggie burger. Second tune, Me Too and it’s firing up and looking like a Michael Jackson/club mash. Oh she sucks on the mic, who is writing these lyrics and arranging the vocals. She’s got a lot of ovaries name checking James Brown. If I was you, I’d wanna be me too? #fuckme. This is worse than listening to Taylor Stork, I mean Swift, attempt the same funky white girl move. You gotta learn to call a garbage can a garbage can, it’s a question of honesty as far as I’m concerned.
