@@@ Lantern: Black Highways and Green Garden Roads (Fixture, 2016). Some psych tinged indie reminiscent of mid ’60s Who records. The openers is a slow tune but the second one gets the tempo up and install retains the Who influences. Less bombastic to be sure, but the quirkiness mixed with rock sounds and vibes. This is pretty good indie music, I know that’s shocking to hear and even more shocking to type. Imma gonna swing back and listen more closely to this record. As I listen more to this I really appreciate the drummer and notice the ’50s r&b/pop influences. Check ’em out.
@@@ Red Hot Chili Peppers: Dark Necessities (Warner, 2016). A single off an upcoming June full length and I seen this on the Apple Music. It opens a little New Age with the piano vamp and the handclaps are annoying but Flea is popping in the verse and the drums sound really tight. Considering their discography this seems to be an odd single — more Coldplay/U2 than George Clinton. I like some of the sounds but it sounds like a jumble and isn’t working for me.
@@@ Desaster: The Oath of an Iron Individual (Metal Blade, 2016). I saw this record on the CFUV weekly playlist email. After a bit of standard metal drama-intro they get right into the classic thrash with particularly sweet guitar tones. The frontman is part hardcore shouter and part caveman. These are some of the biggest drum rolls I’ve heard in a long while — homie has got to be hopped up on Red Bull. Big, epic guitar work over classic drum thrashing. Check these guys out if you’re feeling particularly Trump-y.
@@@ Moreland and Arbuckle: Promised Land or Bust (Alligator/Concord, 2016) Some electric blues I got to from last week’s All Music notable release email. Plenty of rock vibes up in here but the guitar tones are really modern and solid and the white boy singer is working the mic pretty hard. The energy is high here and if you dig the way modern blues records sound you will like these guys. Myself I’m torn. I appreciate some of it, but part of me thinks it sounds too much like a rock record.
