@@@ Alicia Keys: In Common (RCA/Sony, 2016) I’m not a huge fan of Alicia Keys because she’s too dramatical and she oversings. But not here on this tasteful, tropicalia tinged tune with sparse elements that work. Even the lyrics are better than the usual cheese. Who wants to love somebody like me, you must be messed up too? That’s not typical pop music lyrical action. NIce bass, simple but effective beat and a little electronic garnish for her voice.
@@@ Beyonce: Sandcastles (Columbia, 2016). We back on the Beyonce watch people! The last tune, Love Drought, was my favorite of the record so far but unfortunately this tune Sandcastles is smelling like a White Castle cheeseburger — a little soggy, a little oversung, and too dramatical. These lyrics are pretty grade school and despite the gospel tinges she throws in for good measure, it ain’t working for me. Beyonce short on soul people, it’s just true.
@@@ Death Angel: The Evil Divide (Nuclear Blast, 2016). Three songs off an upcoming full length banger out at the end of this month. A classic/thrash mashup with metal drums, classic vocals for the most part, and a guitar player that leans classic metal but doesn’t bog down there. These guys sound a whole lot like the classic metal band The Scorpions but with an updated sound.
@@@ The Tribes of Israfel: Red Robes (Napalm Records, 2016). Also off the best metal playlist at Apple Music. I decided to check out these guys after seeing the word Israfel which is the word Israel and felafel merged together. Oh shit, it’s a real word and it’s from the Quran so I guess it’s not the fusion of Israel and felafel as that wouldn’t be super Islamic. Here at Deep in the Music we respect all faiths, especially the Muslims as they’ve been unfairly held responsible for the peckerhead actions of those assholes and the planes and the yadda yadda yadda. Despite unwavering support for Muslims, this song stinks. It’s like that downer grunge band Alice in Chains that I couldn’t stand. Less cheesy but also plain. I don’t know if this song will end. Ah well, maybe you will like it!!!
