4/21/16: Dirty Fences, Rae Sremmurd, Sturgill Simpson, A$AP Ferg,

@@@ Dirty Fences: Full Tramp (Slovenly, 2015).  Some psych/garage that I got to via a music publicist email.  I’ve often lamented how most music labelled garage punk is probably not garage punk.  This is more psych than punk but you know how much I hate being a genre bitch.  This secont tune, Judy, is pretty poppy.  These guys sound Ramones lite with a few Cheap Trick pubes sprinkled in.  A little muscle but they’re definitely taking showers.

@@@ Rae Sremmurd: Look Alive (Eardruma/Interscope, 2016).  I love the Apple Music Best of the Week list, because it’s not.  Occasionally something interesting but a lot of tripe.  This is a ballad over skittery Dirty South beats and fat thumpin’ bass.  Really pleasant down low for sure.  The singer, not so much.  A sung verse gives way to rhymes with some floating digital beats.  The sung hook stinks and the MC sounds high out of his mind.  I’ve heard this hook five times now and that’s pretty much enough so I be movin’ on.

@@@ Sturgill Simpson: A Sailor’s Guide to Earth (Atlantic, 2016).  This gent’s record has been up on the front page of Apple Music for ever and a day so I finally clicked on this psychedelic, alt-country record.  And as usual with the music business this first tune is neither psychedelic nor alt-country.  It sounds like a mainstream ’70s country record by somebody that’s smoke too much weed in the studio.  The first tune erupts into a soul middle part and this second one opens up My Morning Jacket-y.  I’ve sample four of the tunes here and the common thread is old school country with soul threads woven in.  It’s all right.  Some may find his voice classic, but I find it kinda not alt.

@@@ A$AP Ferg: Strive (Featuring Missy Elliott) (RCA, 2016).  Wow, what a mash.  Take an EDM piano vamp, an EDM snare roll then into straight club bubbling underneath rhymes about rising up.  You’re rich in opportunities and you’re missing in opportunities.  Sure, okay.  Missy’s section is better but the chorus is pretty bad.
