@@@ Hemmingbirds: Half a Second (Self-released?, 2016) Some melodic power pop punk that I got to via a music publicist. If I don’t get a good balance of sweetness and muscle I have no time for this formula. The singer here is pretty melodic (throwing in some whoo hoos), but the guitars, bass, and drums are pretty raucous. The second tune takes the tempo down a bit but it’s the same. I like this, check these guys out.
@@@ J57: Landmines (Balanced Records, 2016). Some mostly left field hip hop off this week’s CFUV weekly email. The first tune is a crazy looped over and over with little robot/angel voices and a thwacking snare. Let’s skip ahead as I feel like I’m trapped in a washing machine. This second tune is different with some synth pipes, a bass squeedle, and a mechanical beat. Just barely sprinkled with funk, this bad boy is. I don’t find the instrumental arrangement here compelling enough to not miss an MC. One more track to see if it turns around. Ah, I don’t think so — I’m not a fan of either the synth sounds or the beats. Peep for yourself.
@@@ Free Cake for Every Creature: Talking Quietly of Anything With You (Double Double Whammy, 2016). Also off this week’s CFUV weekly playlist email. Spare indie with a barely audible, sensitive soul female singer. Very feelings based lyrics and I dig the sparseness of this first track. The second tune is a more fragile Yo La Tengo kinda tune. It would be hard to call this rocking. Let’s check one more. The third tune, Chubby Cows, is the most uptempo of the bunch I’ve heard. If you dig the singer and her lovelorn yodel you will feel this record, but if you don’t well then.
@@@ Rae Spoon: Armour (Coax Records, 2016). Some indie electronic off this week’s CFUV weekly playlist email. Downtempo with guitars as well as New Age tinged sounds to this first tune, Armour. The female singer is an art school Ice Queen on this second tune, a synth rock nugget. I better head out of here, this isn’t for me.
