4/18/16: Pink, Blue Helix, Girl Band

@@@ Pink: Just Like Fire (RCA, 2016)  I have dug Pink tunes in the past, but not this nugget.  It’s a New Age, aspirational biscuit with a lot of musical elements that I don’t like.  Strummed acoustic guitar of a sort, big Imma ’bout to cream my jeans panting, and a money shot chorus.  A little EDM skitter in the chorus and I do dig the vocal melody.  The rest, eh, not so much.  I heard a lyrical fragment that says something like ‘you can just doit if you believe.’  I object to these sentiments.  I see from the GooglePimpTube that this is a song from a Disney movie.  Well, Pink got paid but the song kinda blows and especially if the dirty hand of Disney is massaging it.

@@@ Blue Helix: Tale of Two Halves (Blue Helix, 2014).  Some mainstream rock I got to via the indie music blog IndiePulse.  Big guitar, arena rock but not Bon Jovi hairy and more muscular.  Nice buzzy bass sound in this first tune.  It’s an interesting blend — a little stoner metal, a bunch of arena rock, a tad of grunge, and metal sounding drums.

@@@ Girl Band: Holding Hands with Jamie (Rough Trade, 2015).  It appears I have successfully chewed my way through this top 100 records of 2015 that I have had bookmarked since way back when.  It’s more interesting than most of what I have heard on this list. This first tune alternates between urgent post-rock and mostly vocal slackness.  Periodic outbursts of guitar, two vocalists, lots of surges and tom heavy drumming, it feels like an update to punk attitude with different sounds and feelings.  These guys are described as noise rock and while they definitely will emit squalls of guitar noise and the singer is a bit of a mental patient there is a tunefulness within their songs.  This is pretty good.
