@@@ Revalation: #BernNotice (Self-released, 2016). A super pro-Bernie Sanders hip hop tune that I got to via an indie hip hop promo email. I like the beats and the MC’s flow in the chorus. The last line of the tune chiding our culture for being obsessed with money is well placed. Even Bernie makes an appearance in the tune.
@@@ Eric Chenaux: Skullsplitter (Constellation, 2015). I been chewing on this top 100 records of 2015 over heah and this one is #65. This first tune is a trippy guitar piece. He’s got a background progression and then it it’s double with the same chords but with some twisted ass processing that goes well with his super smooth voice. Contrast, people, I dig the contrast. I’m on the fifth tune as I finish my taxes and Chenaux has made a kind of folk (his singing)/jam (his extensive guitar playing) record. It’s definitely a unique record he has made and I appreciate that. His voice sounds a bit like Antony from Antony and the Johnsons but minus a tad of the weirdness.
@@@ Mike Posner: I Took a Pill in Ibiza ( , 2016). I saw a music biz blogger losing his nut over this track so I thought it deserved a peep. It’s got basic EDM keyboard vamps and a lightly slinky club beat but what stands out is Mr. Posner’s vocals. He’s got a very poppy and pretty voice and while there is a lot of oooohing and aaaaahing he’s got a nice melody and rhythm in the verse. Outside of the melody and the verse and the wistful vibe you don’t often find in club tunes, he doesn’t have that much going on. Leave it to a music biz type to be satisfied with a hook and nothing more.
@@@ Post Malone: White Iverson ( , 2016). A slo gangsta hip hop jam with slow skittery beat and a syrupy (possibly blunted) singer/MC on the mic. He’s been ballin’ since he was young and you won’t miss him when he’s gone. He’s also swaggin’ (doing her from behind) and spending all his fucking pay. It’s entertaining to hear the soft side of the gangster personality. I can’t tell if it’s going this way to get paid or he’s feeling truly soft.
