@@@ Book of Sand: Occult Anarchist Propaganda (Self-released?, 2016). Today is tax day so I think this is a fine day to do an all metal review list. I work as hard as I can to avoid paying taxes so my money won’t go to kill Palestinians and other brown people in the Middle East. I started with two releases below off the Apple Music metal section, but I thought I would head over here to Invisible Oranges for some less mainstream stuff. Boy have I been rewarded with this record, it’s a tasty ball of metal, thrash, and noise. Usually heavy metal records sound very suffocating (by design) but the drums here sound pleasantly ambient, like they’re in a room. The vocals are quite anguished, the guitar sounds are a blend of noisy washes and threedled, agitated shredding, and I’m a big fan of the drumming. With a song title like The White Man’s Burden, how can you go wrong? Pleasantly agitated is how I would describe this music.
@@@ Cursus Impasse: The Pendlomic Vows (Self-released?, 2016). An even more ramped up metal band profiled on Invisible Oranges. Man, these two bands make the two metal bands off Apple Music look like pretty boys. These guys sound like a pack of hyenas gorging on bunnies. Thrash drumming, buzzy guitar but not your typical macho stomp, and a caveman singer. They are discussed on Invisible Oranges as a death metal band, but they most definitely have a different vibe to their music. Kinda wild and circus-y.
@@@ Volbeat: The Devil’s Bleeding Crown (Universal, 2016) A piquant blend of swagger rock with a tad of grunge and mainstream arena heavy music. Big shiny production, mid tempo drumming, and a singer that must be rocking lederhosen. Big guitar solo, big big big. It’s a surprisingly poppy arrangement for a tune called ‘The Devil’s Bleeding Crown.’ Imma gonna have to stick with the Apple Metal list as this hasn’t gotten me my quotient for the day. I’m clipping the lyric video down below but please remember these guys are from Denmark, I think, so English is their second language.
@@@ Hatebreed: A.D. (Nuclear Blast, 2016). Oh my, enter the pissed and the thrashy. Nothing like a band hopped up on Red Bull and meth. Definite threads going back deep to the hardcore shout-a-longs as well as tasty thrash metal drumming and a singer that is tres pissed. Halfway through the tune morphs from thrash to a mid tempo boot stomper. The lyrics are about America and what a piece of shit it is — I’m hearing phrases like ‘corrupt system of belief’ and what not.
