@@@ Systema Solar: Self-titled (Nacional Records, 2016). Man, a lot of great music comes out of Colombia. This is a big group with a lot of voices, a lot of rhythm, and a lot of energy. Check out the bombastic single clipped below for your earholes. This may be the first tune with cowbell that I’ve felt good about it in a long ass time. These guys are mashing a lot of influences into their own special party ball. They have a turntablist, the bass player leans towards classic Latin bass playing, there’s a tad of mariachi, some funky space organ, funky beats. You get the idea.
@@@ My Bubba: Big Bad Good (Cash Only, 2016). A double female indie record I got to via a music publicist email. This first tune is odd lyrics, some minimalist (no metal) drumming and white women harmonizing. It’s being marketed as intimate. Let’s skip ahead as I’m not jumping up and down. The second tune brings in some nice melodic bass, electric organ, and a quiet electric guitar. Oh, the feel here is like an old hippie sweater, small and familiar. All right, one more tune to be thorough. This one is more folky, same small room sound. I like this third tune the most, but I think other folks will like this more than me. Solid B.
@@@ Nick Jonas: Champagne Problems (Island, 2016). Super hot electro pop from the front page of Apple Music. Super hot in that the main appeal of Nick Jonas is his physical appearance. He’s a male bimbo. And whilst he may be hot his music is clunky and cheesy. Oh shit, he’s going into a funky robot breakdown. Woof. This is for fans of Nick Jonas only, as in hotness over skills. Personally I would be embarrassed to crank this in my car going down the street. I would rather paint a giant red L on the hood of the car.
@@@ Kaytranada: Glowed Up (XL, 2016). This is off the Apple Music best of the week and I actually feel this. I had to look the slang up but glowed up is somebody who looks hot after emerging from puberty. I dig the verses here — kinda trippy and weird with some floating digital bits over a funky throb. About two thirds of the way through the tune it segues into, well I’m waiting, it straightens out into a a more conventional outro. Shoulda stuck with the weird ass funk.
