4/5/16: Razteria & Rahman Jamaal, Mikael Lind, Ed Balloon

@@@ Razteria & Rahman Jamaal: Change (Asteria, 2016).  A world music tune I got to via the CFUV weekly email.  A female singer working a singing/rhyme flow with strummed acoustic guitar, rock guitar and okay beats.  I don’t really like the lyrics which revolve around being prepared for change.  I get that and I fear not to change to another tune.  Rock reggae is how these guys describe themselves and that’s pretty much it.

@@@  Mikael Lind: Intentions and Variations EP (Morr Music, 2016).  A preview track from an ambient full length coming on April 8.  The tune opens up with a slow, resonating piano melody.  It’s a little classical, it’s a little New Age.  At least so far.  Here comes a slightly staticky wave of noise, sweet.  He’s got a nice, slow blossoming tune two thirds of the way through — minimalist bass pulse, waves of static, slow piano, a string swell, and some digital ear candy.  I’m not enthralled but I like it.

@@@  Ed Balloon: No Smoking EP (Ed Balloon, 2015).  Some left-field electro hip hop I got to from this week’s Aquarius Records email.  He’s just barely in the hip hop zone as he seems equally interested in indie electronic vibes, r&b, and club music vibes.  I like the variety of sounds to be found here, but it’s not really my thing.

  1. That first track, Change, what an eclectic sound. Enjoyed the mixing of Spanish and French (two languages I happen to understand). And they were in my own backyard for their recent show.
