@@@ Audacity: Hyper Vessels (Suicide Squeeze, 2016). This record is slotted as garage punk on this week’s All Music notable releases and garage punk continues to be one of the most abused genre labels out there. This is amped up emo-punk with metal influences. The singer is fully at the end of his rope and there’s very little garage to this non-punk. The energy is tremendous which is strange as the lyrics revolve around sinking to the bottom of a lake. Well that was this tune, but I found the full record.
And now I’m listening to their full length and it’s not ego-punk-metal, it’s more pop punk. Buzzy, but still not too garage-y. Big singalong vocal melodies and bumptious drumming. I’m guessing these guys are from fish and chips territory. Wait while I DuckDuckGo this. Nope, California! I like this better than the single
@@@ Boulevards: Groove! (Captured Tracks, 2016) Forget us not the black music and how it can be so much better than the white hipster music. Not always, but often. We got the cow bell in the first few bars of the opening track. Oh mama, this is the funk injection. The singer is quite energetic, oh there’s the tambourine this is full on people! From his lyrics it appears he will rock your world and your booty will get loose. The second tune, Got to Go, is a full on disco biscuit — four on the floor and everything. If you don’t like the singer you’re gonna hate this record, if you dig his flow you gonna feel this. To my ears I appreciate his energy but he sounds a bit like a funk cartoon character. A horny cartoon character.
@@@ Andrew Bird: Are You Serious (Wigwam/Concord, 2016). I saw this record on All Music’s weekly notable releases and it’s also on the Apple Music front page. The first tune is a classic rock/indie mash with a rock backbeat and some half swaggering vocals in the verse and things get less mainstream in the chorus. Imma gonna have to return to this record mañana as I can’t get it to stream. Okay, next day, let’s see if the intertoobz wants me to listen to this record. Ah, the intertoobz gives me Andrew Bird 0s and 1s this fine day. The second tune, Roma Fade, continues the mashing of mainstream FM rock and indie elements. It’s well done, but it’s hard to get too excited about a potato like this. Let me check one more tune. Bird is a high end arranger of sounds, but there’s a conservatism to these tunes that I don’t connect with.
