3/19/16: Once and Future Band, Boris, Jaheim

@@@ Once and Future Band: Brain EP (Mouth Magazine Records, 2014).  A prog record off the Aquarius Records’ Prog Part VI list this week.  The first tune (the title track) hear opens up mad 1970’s with strong Yes vibes with a schtickl of jazz fusion.  The lyrics revolve around life and what you’re doing with it and looking at life through death’s eyes, a tad New Age-y, pseudo-psychological for me.  The second and third tunes are more less proggy and more tuneful.  Still centered in sounds of the ’70s like Paul McCartney but less nerded out.

@@@ Boris and Merzbow: The Lost Battle (Boris, 2016).  An experimental rock single off the All Music weekly email.  Thus far the tune sounds like an intro for a basketball team to come out for the pre-game spotlights and shoot around.  I was promised sludge and doom and I ain’t getting it.  Maybe there’s been some kind of mistake.  Yes, there is, I have the wrong record!!  There’s more than one Boris up in here.  Not only that, there’s more than Boris that wrote a song called The Lost Battle!  Fucking interbooz, I love it.  This Boris & Merzbow record is 2 and one half hours long — oh there’s ya doom right there.  I think I just soiled myself, get me a diaper!  No, no bedpan yet.  The guitar is buzzy but sounds computer modeled — maybe, maybe not.  You better not have coffee before you sit down with this record because it’s crawling like a baby.  Big guitar washes, gongs, slow slow slow.  I don’t dislike it, but I don’t like it not because it’s slow but I don’t like these guitar tones and all the sludge and doom is guitar based.

@@@ Jaheim: Struggle Love (Julie’s Dream/BMG, 2016).  You gotsta balance out yer white folks prog and Japanese pseudo-doom/sludge with some black music.  I’m not a big fan of the space age gospel r&b but the vocal arrangements here are pretty impressive.  I wish I liked the tracks more. He’s a loverboy, occasionally explicit, and if you’re into the vocal arrangements you’ll dig it.
