3/18/16: Weezer, The Knocks, Aziza Brahim, Lukas Graham

@@@  Weezer: Weezer (White Album) There are four advance tunes up on Apple Music for the Weezer.  And if you’re thinking Weezer is gonna grow up and do something besides super hooky fuzz pop, don’t shit your pants because the band is frozen in amber like an ancient insect worse than the Ramones.  With song titles like California Kids, Thank God for Girls, and Do You Want to Get High they ain’t half stepping’.  Low IQ pop rockers should flock to Do You Want to Get High — tasty drum sound for sure.

@@@ The Knocks: 55 (Big Beat/WEA, 2016).  Some club/hip hop off last week’s All Music email.  The first tune is a pretty bad ode to New York City that I made it about 75 seconds into.  The second tune opens up gospel-y and morphs into an old school style club banger. The third tune bites the disco biscuit again.  Lots of singing guests, including Tay Tay Swift (hate her!).  If you dig this music that’s totally great, good on  you, but to me this is everything I hate about bad records — cliche records, recycled sounds, lots of guests, and no focus — just a bunch of singles duct taped together to generate cake.

@@@ AZIZA BRAHIM | Abbar El Hamada (Glitterbeat, 2016)  Some North African music off this week’s WRIR playlist email.  Let me DuckDuckGo this woman.  Okay, my ears didn’t betray me Ms. Brahim is from the Western Sahara near Morocco.  Brahim has a lovely voice and the vibe of the records is medium soft.  Not super popped out but certainly not your desert blues — Tinariwen or Noura Mint Seymali.  Wait on that, the first tune is softer but the circular guitar lines are coming out in this second tune.   I’m four tunes in and it looks like this is gonna be more mid to downtempo than blood pressure raising.  The playing is very well done if not a tad staid.  Check out her band camp page and support her if you dig the music.

@@@ Lukas Graham: Drunk in the Morning (Warner, 2016).  Some pop soul off the Apple Music best of the week.  The arrangements are ’70s centric with a pretty boring beat.  Graham sings all right if not a little too much.  It’s a high end booty call tune and the arrangement is really nice and his voice wears as the song unfolds.  Lacking in soul shall we say.
