3/16/16: Marcus Machado, Lake Street Dive, Iggy Pop, James E. Gray

@@@ Marcus Machado: 29 (Not Sure, 2015).  I saw this guitar player name checked in a Guitar Center email.  I dug the chicken scratch, single line plink until the synth sauce came out and the smooth vocals entered.  I like the tone of his simple line tune, but I don’t like his full distort-o tone as it sounds cheesy.  Too much like a sound you might find at say, Guitar Center.  As this record is a mash of rock, blues, and other black musics there are certainly Prince vibes in the air here.  If you’re a youngster and you haven’t taken a deep dive check out 1999, preferably on vinyl.  And buy as little shit as you can at hedge fund owned Guitar Center, buy off eBay and craigslist.

@@@ Lake Street Dive: Side Pony (Nonesuch, 2016).  I knew I was pushing my luck checking out this Nonesuch record after digging the bluegrass/electric double record by Michael Daves.  This is some watered down disco combined with some wuss rock and some wet cardboard soul.  Woof, strictly for bagel brunching Wall Street assholes.  No dirt, no funk, no energy.

@@@ Iggy Pop: American Valhalla (IGHO/Concord, 2016).  I heard on a podcast that Iggy Pop’s new tour is the shizzy so I thought I would take time out to peep out a tune from his new record.  I’ve never really connected with and Iggy Pop record, even the Stooges which was the best I’ve heard.  This is a bit toned down for Mr. Pop who sports a nice fuzzy bass AND a vibraphone on this tune.  There’s a little rockin’ starting up halfway through.  He sounds more like David Bowie here than the proto-godfather of punk.  It’s an all right tune.

@@@ James E. Gray: Modular Robotics (Not sure, 2016).  I was contacted by this musician’s manager for a review so I’m giving it a peep.  It is a dramatic tune with elements of synth rock, arena rock, and a bit of indie.  He really rocks the vocals quite well, and I dig the church organ swells.   He rocks in a pretty mainstream and Styx-like manner with the drama and what not.  Check it for yourself.
