3/7/16: Beach Slang, Big Ups, Bird Dog, Car Seat Headrest

@@@ Beach Slang: The Things we Do to Find People Like Us (Polyvinyl, 2015).  Off NPR’s best 100 bands coming up at the South by Southwest.  The record opens up with some power pop punk.  Very Foo-ey, but with a little Soul Asylum up in there.  The second tune Bad Art and Weird Ideas keeps the same formula but vibes late Lemonheads as well.  Big guitars, melancholic but not mopey singer.

@@@ Big Ups: National Park (Exploding In Sound, 2015).  Off the same South by Southwest.  Math-y proggish verse with a little spiky punk explosion.  The drummer is pretty tight here, the singer is okay and I like the tune much better when they lose it a bit. They shoulda dispensed with the restrained intro and just rocked it from the outset.

@@@ Bird Dog: Misty Shrub (Jamsounds, 2015).  Also upcoming at the SXSW.  This first tune is purdy lonesome with both male and female vocals, acoustic guitar and not much more.  Oh here’s the band and it’s a bit Death Cab for Cutie.  That’s too bad.  The vocalizing is really pretty top notch and it looks set to continue on the second tune.  Again I like the vocals and not the drums so much.  They need a new drummer I’m sure the drummer is really nice, but they need someone more ambient and not so vanilla.

@@@ Car Seat Headrest: Vincent (Matador, 2015).  Opens up with a repeating guitar trill then gets some harmonic sounds shot across the soundstage.  It’s a good start but they’re kinda milking the tit hard.  More guitar loops — a distorted tremolo, a distorted harmonic and a hi hat.  Now upper neck distortion washes.  Okay everybody play now — I must say I did not expect the ’70s post hippie bass line and the nerdy vocalist.  They bring simple horn lines in around 2/3s of the way through the tune.  This tune is almost 8 minutes long and I think it would be much better if it were around 4 minutes long.
