3/6/16: M. Ward, 061180, The Struts

@@@ M. Ward: More Rain (Merge, 2016).  Ward’s 8th record.  I dug some of the earlier ones but the last couple he’s kinda smoothed out and hollowed himself out for the masses.  I dub him the Jimmy Buffett of indie rock.  Mellow sounds, a background drone, and his voice breezy like a mocha latte on a spring day.  I’m reading NY Times’ music critic Ben Ratliff’s new book on music listening and inspired by his pretentious boredom I would say there’s such a thing as too soft and too pretty.  This third tune, Time Won’t Wait, is  proof of my theory and Ward is definitely getting into FM soft rock/Wilco territory.  Boo hiss.

@@@ 061180: The Dream of a God.  A dark ambient record inspired by a series of murders in 1973 in Alabama.  The record cover features the profile of a man stabbing a woman but thus far the first track has been a lot of tectonic monster rumbles, an abstract version of rain and some metallic splashes.  I like the area this musician is working in but it’s a little too slow for me.  I need more layers of slow but I respect the lack of cheese here.

@@@ The Struts: Everybody Wants (Interscope, 2016).  Some Brit rock that I saw a music biz blog-moister jism-ing his trousers over these guys.  If Queen and Guns ‘N Roses had a gay love baby it would sound a lot like these guys.  The singer is quite theatrical and I’m using that word literally not as a euphemism for gay.  I don’t care what he does with his junk.  The second tune sports handclaps, awful lyrics and big arena production and whoa dos.  Oh, this stinks, this is a real musical fart in an elevator.  I have clipped this cheese biscuit below for your listening pleasure.  Go listen to Bohemian Rhapsody, it’s not my favorite but those guys could play.  This third tune has more than a few Oasis pubes and that’s pretty much it for me.
