@@@ Zedd & Aloe Blacc: Candyman (Interscope, 2016). A modern EDM influenced cover of the old 1970’s tune Candyman. The beats are mostly poppy, they got a fat bass pulse working, some synth garnish (oh giant ass fingersnaps), strummed acoustic. The singer is working pretty hard but I’m not buying it. I was about to make some cynical remark about this dude making bank off this tune when I see on the GooglePimpTube that this is the new theme songs for M&Ms. Well, there ya go, the Candyman made this remake of Candyman go down. Sweet!
@@@ Chicano Batman: Black Lipstick (Chicano Batman, 2016). An indie crooner off NPR’s top 100 bands at SXSW over yeah. I picked these guys as they’re not all Wonder Bread Mofos (aka white boys). I like them, it’s a bit of a breezy tune about a bewitching girl that wears black lipstick who will tear you apart. Unlike Tinashe (reviewed below) who will give you the rider of your life. There are moments of indie smartness and a nice space organ so it’s clear why they’re at South by Southwest. The tune sounds fat as well. I hope to be dipping into this big ol’ list of overrated indie as SXSW unfolds (hopefully without a terrorist attack).
@@@ Guerilla Toss: Erasure Stargazer (DFA, 2016). A pleasantly abrasive mash of indie with bits of dance music and old school punk. Fronted by a shouty female singer the general vibe is one of mayhem. That is one of the few appeals of the Trump Baboon — the quality of mayhem is high with Trump. The second tune Grass Shack hews more closely to Red Hot Chili Peppers just with a synth and a vag out front. And having a vag out front changes the tone. Less macho to be sure. This second tune is getting a bit long and art school-y. Keep it quick and commando style people! They definitely have an energetic formula going on.
@@@ Tinashe: Ride of Your Life (RCA, 2016). A lot of mixed car/sex innuendo in this r&b single off the Apple Music front page. Occasionally skittery beats with fat bass pulse and Tinashe whippin’ it till it’s blue/black. Not X rated but with an X rated attitude.
