2/22/16: Carrie Rodriguez, Prins Thomas, The Cave Singers

@@@ Carrie Rodriguez: Lola (Luz Records, 2016)  Some twangy and lush Americana/roots music sung in Spanish.  I got to this via this week’s All Music notable releases.  Dual guitar with tremolo up high and Rodriguez has a voice as delicious as a fresh tortilla.  There is English happening on this second tune for all you Gringo Uber Alles folks out there.  She’s got a little Emmylou Harris and a little Lucinda Williams and a whole lotta Tex Mex flavors going on here.  Imma gonna swing back on this record, check her out.

@@@ Prins Thomas: Principe Del Norte (Smalltown Supersound, 2016).  Some abstract, non-booty electronica I got to via this week’s All Music notable release email.  This first tune has an arpeggiated kinda metallic synth interwoven with a smoother watery arpeggiated over a discrete bass pulse.  He’s on with the arpeggiated synth sound in the second piece, but he’s garnished it with some nice slow floating clouds, and electric bass, and a descending tinkle.  The electric bass takes me a bit out of electronica head towards the prog side of town, but not super so.   A little undercover funk on this track.  A little heavily delayed guitar sound on this third tune.  This is a big cake to eat, over 90 minutes long and it looks like it’s gonna be mostly electronic with touches of prog and wuss rock.

@@@ The Cave Singers: Banshee (Jagjaguwar, 2016).  Some heavily T-Rex biting glam rock on this first tune.  I got to this via the All Music weekly email.  Nasal male singer, stringy bass and that take it the bank glam beat.  Oh my, big switch as the second tune opens up with clean arpeggiated guitar and a purdy harmonica pastoral thing.  I’m confusado — oh no, here comes the mid 1970’s cheesy love song lyrics.  This third tune is not of the ’70s, but it’s kinda worse.  It’s an uplifting mid tempo rock anthem with big guitars and aspirational lyrics.  It seems mainstream rock has been rebranded as a wing of indie rock because there’s not much that I associate with indie rock here.
